2 Postdocs in Optical Fiber Communication and ultralow noise amplifiers

Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the division
The Photonics laboratory is currently involved with research on optical communication systems, optical amplifiers, and transmitters. We have a state-of-the experimental facility for optical communication and have excellent funding available for the next several years. Currently, we are experiencing an interesting trend of using advanced electronics in optical system with the purpose of improving the capacity, lowering the cost, etc. Such a co-optimization of optics and electronics promises  new ways to implement optical networks and is expected to form a significant breakthrough for next generation telecom networking from metro-scale to global-scale. Related to this, we also work on phase-sensitive optical amplifiers. These have the unique ability to, in principle, provide noiseless amplification and recently we demonstrated the lowest noise figure ever reported (1 dB). While these amplifiers have great promise for use in optical transmission, there exist many other very exciting applications ranging from spectroscopy, sensing to free-space communication.

Major responsibilities
The persons filling these positions will participate in an expanding effort on phase-sensitive parametric amplifiers and involves both experimental and numerical/theoretical work. While optical signal transmission will be the main application, we will also pursue other interesting opportunities.

The appointments offer an opportunity to qualify for further research positions within academia or industry. The majority of your working time is devoted to your own research. Included in your work is also to take part in supervision of Ph.D. students and M.Sc. thesis students. Teaching of undergraduate students may also be included to a small extent.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
Applicant should have a Ph.D. degree (normally not older than 3 years) preferably in Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering or similar. Strong experimental experience in the area of optical communication and/or nonlinear optics is highly advantageous.

We are looking for innovative self-motivated people that will be able work independently as well as in larger teams. Fluency in English is a requirement.

Application procedure
The application should be marked with Ref 20130242 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically via Chalmers webpage.

Application deadline: November 1st, 2013
