Description
4 PhD positions are available within the Distributed Systems and Communications (DISCO) Group at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Karlstad University. Research within DISCO is focused on development of transport and application layer protocols, cross-layer interactions, networking techniques for low latency Internet communication and the design of future wireless access and backhaul systems, including Software Defined Networking (SDN).

Position 1
This position is focused on new evolutional transport frameworks for the Internet. It is closely related to recent standardization initiatives within the IETF and targets solutions that allow end hosts and network elements to adapt to application demands and its environment, providing flexible trade-offs between for example performance, energy-efficiency and cost. Knowledge or experience in some of the areas of transport protocols, resource allocation, wireless networks or performance modeling and evaluation is therefore desirable.

Position 2
This position is focused on scalable signaling support for future mobile systems; targeting solutions for cost-efficient low-latency transport in the LTE evolved packet core and the integration with Cloud Telecoms including key technologies such as Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). Knowledge or experience in some of the areas of transport protocols, cellular system architectures and protocols, cloud-based architectures, resource allocation or performance modeling and evaluation is therefore desirable.

Position 3
This position is focused on Software Defined Networking for Wireless Access and Backhaul Networks. Application areas such as Mobile Data Offloading, Backhaul Bandwidth Aggregation or Self-organizing Networks will be targeted through a combination of analytical modelling, simulations and experimentation. Knowledge or experience in some of the areas of computer networks, SDN and tools such as Matlab or network simulators is therefore desirable.

Position 4
This position is focused on Software Defined Networking for the Cloud. Application areas such as Cloud Computing by defining and proposing primitives for Software-Defined Data Center Networks will be targeted through a combination of analytical modelling, simulations and experimentation. Knowledge or experience in some of the areas of computer networks, SDN and tools such as Matlab or network simulators is therefore desirable.

Good programming skills as well as good oral and written communication skills in English are required for all 4 positions.
The candidates should be able to work independently, as well as in a team; and be enthusiastic about pushing the state-of-the-art. Collaboration with academic and industry partners through national/international research projects is expected.

Eligibility
Eligible for this position are candidates with a University degree of 240 ECTS, of which at least 60 ECTS were awarded for courses at advanced level and have a Master’s degree or the Swedish Magister or Civilingenjör Degrees in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or equivalent. Eligible are also those candidates who have achieved corresponding degrees or knowledge in Sweden or abroad.

Terms
The position is limited to 4 years, but can be prolonged for up to one more year, if the PhD student also takes over other research, teaching or administrative tasks besides her/his PhD research. Those tasks should not exceed 20% of the time of a full-time position. The earliest date for filling the position is June 1, 2014.

Admission
Admission is based on individual assessment of the candidates’ abilities to successfully pass the research education.

Application
Applications should be submitted electronically via the Karlstad University web-based recruitment tool, NetRecruiter, with uploaded attachments. NetRecruiter is available at http://www.kau.mynetworkglobal.com/en/what:login/

The application should include the following items:

- Cover letter describing the applicant and her/his research interests in relation to the announced positions. Which of the announced positions the candidate is primarily interested in should be indicated in the cover letter.
- CV
- Relevant diplomas and a list of attended courses with grades and dates
- Copies of publications or proofs of other achievements if applicable
- Reference letters or contact information of at least two reference persons
