CAE Engineer - Crank system and Valve Train analysis, 2 positions

At Research & Development you will be a key contributor to the next generation outstanding luxury cars from Volvo. Together with other engineers around the world, you and your team will create innovative human-centric car technology that makes life less complicated and more enjoyable for people. Are you interested in design and connected car technology? Do you share our passion for people, the environment and our urge to create a superior driving experience? Research and Development is the place for you to prosper.

The group Engine CAE is responsible for advanced technical calculations within the Engine Development department at Volvo Car Group. The area of the group includes Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), structural analysis (FEM) and other types of mechanical analyses. Analyses are performed on different system levels with the overall purpose of developing attributes, dimensioning components and virtually verify different technical solutions.

As a CAE Engineer, within Crank system or Valve Train analysis you will perform calculations on either crank train dynamics, crankshaft balancing, bearing function and crank train irregularity or calculations on the valve train concerning dynamics, kinematics and cam profile design. The work is carried out primarily in early development phases of an engine project. Both the crank system and the valve train have a very big influence of important engine attributes such as fuel consumption, engine performance and noise. The systems are also very important as starting points when designing the overall engine architecture. We use the advanced computer programs EXCITE TimingDrive / PowerUnit and SIMDRIVE as main tools supported by in house developed matlab programs. State of the art FE codes ABAQUS and NASTRAN are also available.

We are looking for someone that is analytical and has a genuine interest in advanced technical calculations and highly developed methods. The work will be carried out both independently and in teams. As the role will involve a broad span of contacts you should have a strong ability to communicate and to convey results in a structured and understandable way.

Main responsibilities

* Perform calculations on crank system or valve train in order to analyse dynamical behavior and recommend measures to minimize vibrations and loads
* Perform calculations on bearings concerning load, lubrication and friction
* For crank system perform calculations to optimize crank counter balancing to minimize vibrations and weight
* For valve train system design cam profiles by performing kinematic analysis
* For valve train system perform calculations to minimize torsional vibrations by tuning engine transmission components
* Analyse results and issue recommendations
* Take part in method development within the area
* Actively participate in development projects and teams

Required qualifications

* M. Sc in Mechanical Engineering with focus on dynamics
* Experience of advanced computer aided analysis
* Experience of computer aided analysis of dynamic mechanical systems
* Experience of using Multi Body Systems computer programs is meritorious
* Experience of analysis of crank train systems of an internal combustion engine is meritorious
* Experience of analysis of valve trains and engine transmissions is meritorious
* Fluent in English, spoken and written

Personal qualities

* Analytical
* Communicative and self-driven
* Positive attitude
* Ability to work effectively as part of an engineering team in a mix of cultures
