The arena

Discovery Science is a global function within Innovative Medicines, IM, in AstraZeneca. Discovery Science supports innovative medicine project teams from multifunctional capability centers in Alderley Park, Boston and Mölndal. Discovery Sciences is mainly involved in early lead generation through the late Lead optimization stage of drug discovery. It is composed of several capabilities where Reagent and Assay Development (RAD) is one among several others such as Screening Sciences and Structure & Biophysics. This position will be placed in the RAD Department where we focus on delivering different types of reagents and assays with high impact into the drug development.

The role

To be lab-based, providing strong expertise in the competency of Cell Science, propose experimental strategies, troubleshoot problems and to make a significant contribution to the practical delivery of projects in accordance with SHE requirements and in compliance with all AZ Corporate responsibility policies.

The following skills are highly desirable:
Extensive expertise in the design and production of cells and membranes to be used directly for target validation and screening, including HTS format
Extensive expertise of protein expression to enable the purification of proteins for structure target validation and/or screening.
Expertise in a range of expression systems including in vitro translation, bacterial (E.coli) expression, baculovirus but in particular mammalian transient and stable expression systems
Extensive expertise in assay development and full statistical assay validation for screening
Strong experience in cell biology
Expertise in aspects large scale cell supply
Extensive experience in the functional characterization of cells
Extensive expertise in the development of stable cell lines including all aspects of large scale production
Extensive hands on knowledge in siRNA and qPCR for screening purpose
Extensive experience of drug discovery and cell deliverables in an industrial setting
Experience of culturing primary cells and other complex cells
Expertise in cell-based assay design in particular in primary cells or differentiated cells from iPS or stem cells
Theoretical understanding of assay design relevant to the pharmacology
Practical understanding of assay optimisation, including statistical tools such as factorial experimental design, to enable generation of robust, reproducible and sensitive assays
Thorough understanding of cell based assay technology platforms and ability to troubleshoot
