The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) seeks an intern to join its Communications Department. The internship will be virtual or partially require on-site presence at SIPRI, depending on Covid-19 restrictions. The intern will be part of the team which supports the preparation and administration of SIPRI’s events and conferences.

Context

Established in 1966, SIPRI is consistently ranked as one of the world’s top think tanks. The institute is dedicated to independent research into peace, conflict and security and is known worldwide for its flagship publication, the SIPRI Yearbook, and its databases.

Main tasks

The successful applicant will get the opportunity to get first-hand experience of day-to-day working environment at SIPRI, focusing especially on events and conference promotion. As a member of the Communications Department, the successful candidate will get the chance to be involved in all functions related to the preparation and delivery of SIPRI events, including the annual SIPRI Lecture and the 2022 Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development.

The internship opportunity offers insights and practical experience in a great variety of areas including:


• administrative and logistical support in the lead-up to public events and seminars;
• on-site support during events, if the candidate is residing in Stockholm and regulations allow;
• back-end work to setup online event platforms;
• internal and external communication with external partners;
• communication-related tasks, including updating SIPRI’s website.

Qualifications and personal attributes

To benefit the most from this internship, the successful candidate would ideally:


• currently be studying for or recently have graduated with a degree in a field relevant to events management, communication and/or have experience organizing online events;
• have fluency in written and spoken English (proficiency in Swedish will be considered an asset);
• have strong organizational skills;
• pay close attention to detail;
• have a collaborative mindset;
• have an interest in politics and international relations;
• have proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Microsoft Excel).

Internship details

This online internship is full-time and will start at the candidate’s earliest convenience and last until the end of June. Due to Covid-19, SIPRI can currently only offer virtual internships, but depending on the circumstances and recommendations during February–June, on-site presence at SIPRI is preferred.

The final date for applying for this position is 10 February 2022.

Please note that SIPRI cannot pay for housing, travel or any other expenses and does not pay interns a salary. Applicants should indicate in their applications that they can provide their own funding to cover all their costs during the internship period either in Sweden or their country of residence, depending on Covid-19 restrictions.
