BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the Systems Manager, act as primary network systems administrator and systems analyst for a variety of Department of State systems and applications. Self-direction is required for both routine and critical network administration tasks. Provide equipment maintenance, help desk assistance and user application support.
Major duties include the following:
Daily Operations - 15%
The incumbent is charged with the day-to-day operations of the Windows 2000/2003 local area network. On a daily basis, performs beginning of day operations, analyze the system for possible problems, and report them. Also responsible for problem resolution, hardware and software installation and configuration, and miscellaneous tasks as they arise. Under the direction of the FSN Systems Manager, act as primary network systems administrator and systems analyst for OpenNet, PDNet and Internet systems. This includes supporting OpenNet and PDNet applications, SMS, SQL, SAV, IIS, and all network hardware and firewalls. Perform daily start up of Consular systems including re-start of the PARSER server and, if necessary, the TCM/DNC/PBNC and Oracle servers. Also responsible for monitoring the SAV servers during the morning start-up routine and reports any anomalies. Assist in ensuring that all clients have the current Symantec Anti-Virus software installed and the latest SAV definition files.
Loading and Maintaining Software/Hardware - 30%
Assist FSN System Manager to configure, implement, and maintain all software in use at post (including COTS and corporate software). Assist with configuring and maintaining server and workstations on both the OPENNET and Internet LANs. Insure all software on client PCs is properly configured and is compliant with IRM and DS security configuration requirements. Resolve non-compliance issues in a timely manner, or report complex matters to the IMO and/or FSN LAN Manager as soon as possible. Assists in the handling and maintaining of all applications including Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) and Corporate (local and State Department developed) applications including Consular, B&F, Admin and GSO-specific applications. The incumbent must also keep abreast of the constantly evolving world of personal computers. This is accomplished through on the job training (both with a senior individual and self-initiated), and consultation with any variety of computer-related publications during working hours as well as on one's own time. A thorough knowledge of the interconnection and interoperation of computers installed on a large Local Area Network (LAN) is also essential. Must also be able to install and configure peripherals to be connected to the network. The planning, installation and configuration of the proper software components for the particular computer's intended task is also necessary.
LAN System Development - 20%
Assist FSN System Manager to develop and maintain Windows-based software solutions and web-based solutions. Development includes MS-SQL database design and administration, batch file development, Website development and maintenance. Assist with all aspects of LAN maintenance. The incumbent will test all equipment for proper operation and offer recommendations on problem resolution.
User Support Services - 35%
Responsible for responding to emergency Help Desk calls and insuring all users receive timely and complete service. This includes troubleshooting, and correcting
