Start: January 2022 to June 2022, or as agreed with the student

A focus for AstraZeneca Gothenburg is to develop inhaled drugs for the treatment of respiratory diseases such as asthma. A critical domain in this work is to produce active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) particles with appropriate properties e.g. size and morphology, where spray drying is one of efficient formulation platforms. To this end, enabling the quantitative prediction of spray drying process will provide us an efficient tool to optimize and accelerate the development process.

Responsibilities
This project aims to coupling drying kinetics to CFD simulation to enable the predict of particle properties e.g. morphology for various spray dryers across scales.

Responsibilities include building and improving CFD simulations on OpenFOAM based on existing CFD works on ANSYS Fluent. Coupling droplet drying kinetics models based on heat and mass transfer to CFD simulation to resolve particle formation at individual particle level will be a critical part of the work.

Validating the simulations with available experimental data will also be included.

The work is to be conducted from January to June 2022, or as agreed with the student.

Qualifications
Essential Requirements
Experience computational fluid dynamics
Solid understanding in transport phenomena and mathematical modelling
Experience in computer programming e.g. C++, python
Pursuing a master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline
Excellent problem solving skills  

Desirable Requirements
Experience in working in the labs
