Creative Electrical Machine Specialist

You will be part of Corporate Research in Västerås. The department of Power Technologies at Corporate Research in Västerås is responsible for ABB:s strategic research and development worldwide in the areas of power systems, power products and electrical machines. The group is working closely with all business units within the Discrete Automation and Motion division.

As an Electrical Machine Specialist, you will perform research activities towards the electrical machine technology, with specific focus on multiphysics phenomena, which includes thermal, mechanical, structure and electromagnetic designs. You will start by getting into the needs and the application areas for the existing products, and then improve and optimize their performance. You will naturally develop a solid theoretical understanding of thermal-mechanical stress that can be added as design matrices in addition to electromagnetic considerations.

As Motor Drive Control Specialist, you will perform activities towards advanced motor control areas with specific focus on sensorless, energy efficiency and robust model based approaches. You will also be responsible for leading and executing projects according to given objectives, budget and schedule. Moreover, you will document and communicate your results within ABB.

To apply for the role as Electrical Machine Specialist, you need a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or an advanced graduate degree combined with industrial experience. You also need experience from performing laboratory experiments and multi-physics numerical simulations as well as real time co-simulations. Familiarity with software tools, such as Maxwell, FLUX, Simplorer, Fluent, COMSOL and Matlab, is another prerequisite as is experience from project management. You need to be proficient in written and spoken English, as this will be your working language. Knowledge of Swedish is naturally advantageous. As you will present results from your simulations, you need strong communication and presentation skills. Any relevant industry or advanced R&D experience is considered an additional qualification. Your experience provides your natural analytical mind with the ability to think strategically regarding technological R&D, specifically in the field of electrical machines. You are structured and creative with a strong inner drive. Further, you have the ability to work independently as well as in teams to meet set goals.

For the position as Advanced Power Electronics and Motor Control Specialist, you are expected to have a Ph.D. or equivalent in disciplines related to power electronics and control within the field of electrical machines and drives. You poise top quality analytical and communication skills, theoretical understanding and numerical modeling (co-simulation numerical approach) together with an innovative and creative mind. The candidate must also have a strong strive to initiate new research proposals and to work in a multi cultural team environment. The working language is English and the potential candidate is expected to start as soon as possible
