Description of CIRCLE
CIRCLE is an interdisciplinary centre for innovation research spanning several faculties at Lund University.

Research at CIRCLE aims to understand and explain how innovation can contribute to a good society and tackle societal challenges like economic crises, climate change or increased globalization of economic activities. This aim requires advanced insights into how knowledge is created and diffused in organizations, networks, regions, countries, and globally; how knowledge is turned into innovations; and which societal conditions promote the creation and diffusion of innovation. A designated research platform at CIRCLE aims to better understand and explain the role of eco-innovation in sustainable transitions. In doing so, it seeks to identify and unpack the specific characteristics, drivers and barriers of eco-innovation. A detailed description of CIRCLE’s research programs and Annual Reports can be found at www.circle.lu.se.

Job assignments

Research field

This position is within the research area concerning sustainability transitions. The main empirical focus of the project is innovation processes for decarbonisation in energy-intensive industries (steel, plastics, paper and food).

The research will be developed in connection with the EU-funded Horizon 2020 research project ‘REINVENT – Realising Innovation in Transitions for Decarbonisation’. This project is run in collaboration with partners in the Netherlands (Utrecht University and PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency), Germany (The Wuppertal Institute) and the UK (University of Durham). The overall aim of REINVENT is to help Europe achieve its long-term climate objectives, while supporting the development of other societal benefits and the economy, by analysing sectors where low carbon transitions are still relatively unexplored. The approach is to study and understand transitions and emerging initiatives from within sectoral contexts where government climate policy is only one of many factors that shape perceptions and strategies.

Duties

The doctoral candidate programme amounts to 240 credits. It formally ends with the doctoral candidate publicly defending his/her printed doctoral thesis. The holder of the position has as his/her primary obligation to successfully fulfil his/her third cycle education ending with a doctoral degree (PhD). Regulations concerning appointment as a doctoral student can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, 1-7 §§.

The doctoral studies in this position will be related to the international research project ‘REINVENT – Realising Innovation in Transitions for Decarbonisation’, coordinated by Professor Lars J. Nilsson. The topics of the candidate’s doctoral work must have strong relevance for and be closely related to the REINVENT research project. Specifically, the research of the doctoral candidate will focus on (1) mapping decarbonisation innovations using existing data sources and (2) analysing decarbonisation innovations using both qualitative (innovation biographies) and quantitative methods. Theoretically the work should primarily be anchored in economic geography, innovation systems literature and the literature on sustainable transitions.

The position presupposes that the successful applicant is accepted as a doctoral student at the PhD-program at the Department of Human Geography. Curriculum and guidelines can be found at www.keg.lu.se/en/research/phd-education/phd-in-human-geography. The doctoral candidate will share his/her time between CIRCLE and the Department of Human Geography.

Qualifications
For appointment to the position, the applicant is required to be eligible for admission to the doctoral (PhD) program in Human Geography. Candidates with other relevant social science disciplinary backgrounds than Economic Geography are also encouraged to apply (see further information below as well as the online syllabus, which can be found at http://keg.lu.se/en/sites/keg.lu.se.en/files/as2014.pdf).

To be eligible for third cycle studies an applicant must

- Have been awarded a second cycle degree
- Have completed studies the equivalent of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at the second cycle level, or
- Have acquired comparable qualifications in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Basis of assessment
Regulations concerning appointment as a doctoral student can be found in HF 5 Chap 1-7§§ and SFS 1998:80. The applicants will be assessed on the basis of their prospects of meeting the requirements for a doctoral degree (PhD). Particular emphasis will be placed upon the academic qualifications of the applicants. Previous experience with international studies and/or research projects will be considered a merit. Experience with both quantitative and qualitative methods will also be considered a merit. Fluent English (written and spoken) is a requirement.
