The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for seven Engineers in Beam Diagnostics.

Description of directorate/division
The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of the ESS accelerator. The pulsed superconducting linac, to be built in Lund, will produce a 5MW average power proton beam, driving the world’s most powerful neutron source. The Beam Diagnostics Group works alongside the other groups in the Accelerator Division, and is responsible for all the beam diagnostics systems in the ESS accelerator.  

Description of main responsibilities
The candidates will work on the implementation of one or more diagnostics system. The seven positions will be divided approximately as follows:

    •    1 position focused on Analog Electronics
    •    1 position focused on Digital Electronics/FPGA programming
    •    1 position focused on Electronics & Board Design
    •    1 position focused on Detector Design & EM Simulations
    •    1 position focused on Detector Design and Motion Control
    •    1 position focused on Mechanical Design & Fabrication
    •    1 position focused on Front-end Software

Some adjustments to the specific focus of each position can be made based on the profile of the successful candidate.

Qualifications
MSc or equivalent in physics, electrical engineering or a related field with a good understanding of particle accelerators and significant experience in beam diagnostics. In particular, we are looking for candidates with significant experience in the following areas:

Particle detector design, electromagnetic simulations, motion control and precision mechanics, challenging environments like UHV and ionizing radiation, analog/digital electronics and PCB design, RF and microwave devices, signal processing and data analysis, FPGA programming, front-end software development (C/C++).

In addition, experience in the following areas would be beneficial:
Optical system design, imaging and image processing, electro-optics, fiber optics, radiation hard electronics and components, control systems and feedback, electromagnetic compatibility, thermo-mechanical analysis, accelerator operation, international collaborations.

Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

Duration & Location
Open ended contract, with six months initial probationary period, or an initial two years contract with possibility of conversion to open ended contract, depending on qualifications and area of expertise of the candidate.
Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
