SIPRI is an independent international institute for research into problems of peace and conflict, especially those of arms control and disarmament. Located in Stockholm, Sweden, SIPRI's staff are recruited from all parts of the world. The working language of the institute is English. The SIPRI Arms Production Project, situated within the Military Expenditure and Arms Production Programme, has monitored and analysed developments in the arms industry since the late 1980s. The SIPRI Arms Industry Database, with data for about 700 companies back to 1990, is one of few data sets on the major companies in the global arms industry available. SIPRI seeks applications for the position of Researcher and Head of the Arms Production Project within the Military Expenditure and Arms Production Programme: Job description *Responsibility for the maintenance of the SIPRI Arms Industry Database, which involves collecting and processing financial and employment data on arms-producing companies. based on open sources, including company annual report, company websites, data from defence industry associations and governments, information in the media, and input from the project network of experts in particular countries. *Producing analysis of arms industry data and trends, for inclusion in the SIPRI Yearbook and elsewhere. *Reading and filing (in SIPRI's electronic filing system) relevant material on military expenditure from a variety of print and electronic sources. *Maintaining the SIPRI web pages relating to the arms industry, in conjunction with other members of the programme. *Handling information requests on the arms industry. *Engaging in research and research consultancy work in areas relevant to the project for external funders. *Developing, in co-operation with the programme leader, new areas for research relevant to the project and funding applications for new projects. Person specification Essential characteristics *Possession of a postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline (including but not limited to Economics, Politics/International Relations); or equivalent level of in-depth knowledge and understanding of relevant subjects. *Highly numerate, and able and willing to work with large volumes of data. *Fluent in written and spoken English *Ability to write fluently at an academic level *An interest in working on issues related to the arms industry and arms production. *An interest in and understanding of issues relating to international peace and security *Good computer skills, including use of word processing and spreadsheet packages, and of using the internet to find and assess sources of information. *Ability to work independently and as part of a team *An international orientation Desirable characteristics *In possession of, or near completion of, a PhD in a relevant discipline *An understanding of economic and political issues relating to arms production and the arms industry *Knowledge of HTML
