SIPRI is an independent international institute for research into problems of peace and conflict, especially those of arms control and disarmament. The working language of the institute is English. The SIPRI programme on Military Expenditure and Arms Production seeks applications for the position of Researcher specializing in governance and security issues in African countries. The main task of this position is to coordinate and conduct research for a new SIPRI project on The Impact of External Actors on Governance and Security in African Countries. Another important task is to participate in the data collection process and analysis of military expenditure developments in African countries. Job description This researcher will: *Contribute to the coordination and administration of the Africa project, which involves contact with participating civil society organizations, researchers and other experts in African countries. *Contribute to the research activities within the Africa project, including mapping of the activities of external actors in African countries. *Collect and process data on military expenditure in African countries based on primary sources, including official sources of government budget and expenditure data, published on the Internet and elsewhere, government responses to our questionnaire, and input from the project network of experts in particular countries. *Produce analysis of military expenditure data and trends, in particular for African countries, for inclusion in the SIPRI Yearbook and elsewhere. *Read and file (in SIPRI's electronic filing system) relevant material on military expenditure from a variety of print and electronic sources. *Maintain the SIPRI web site for the Africa project. *Handle information requests on military expenditure in African countries. Qualifications and essential attributes *A postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline for a study on the politics and economics of external activities in the area of peace and security in African countries. *An in-depth knowledge of African economic, political and/or security issues. *Experience of working with African institutions, including civil society organizations, and governmental and/or intergovernmental organizations *Fluent in written and spoken English. *Ability and experience to write fluently at an academic level. *Good computer skills, including use of word processing and spreadsheet packages, and of using the internet to find and assess sources of information. *Ability to work independently and as part of a team *An interest in and understanding of issues relating to international peace and security Desirable attributes *Possession of, or close to completion of, a PhD in a relevant discipline. *Other language abilities, in particular French. *Knowledge of HTML
