The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is an independent international institute for research into problems of peace and conflict, especially those of arms control and disarmament. It ranks as one of the world's foremost research organizations focusing on international security and foreign affairs. SIPRI is seeking a Researcher to join its Arms Control and Nonproliferation Programme. The Programme conducts research into nuclear, biological and chemical weapon-related issues, ballistic missile delivery systems and dual-use technologies associated with the aforementioned. The programme has a strong emphasis on technical issues in the field of arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation. The programme will initiate a project to examine technical approaches to detect and verify ballistic missile launches. The position will be based at the SIPRI headquarters outside of Stockholm, Sweden. The major responsibilities of this position will include: *Taking on the role of principal investigator in the project under the supervision of Dr. Ian Anthony, the Programme Leader. *Making a comprehensive inventory of the signals produced by ballistic missiles on launch. *Making a comprehensive inventory of existing sensor networks that can identify and monitor the identified signals. *Analysing the effectiveness of sensor networks in identifying and verifying ballistic missile launches. *Working actively and effectively within an international and inter-disciplinary team of researchers. *Taking part in the normal life of SIPRI including participation in the Research Staff Collegium. *Assisting on special projects, as requested. The successful candidate will have the following experience and preferred qualifications/skills: *Doctorate level qualification in a relevant technical field. *At least two years of relevant professional experience. *Demonstrated interest and competence in the Programme's research agenda. *Excellent research, writing and editing skills. *Reading, writing and speaking fluency in English language. *Strong communication, organizational and planning skills, with attention to detail. *Strong working knowledge of standard office software, including web editing/HTML. *Cooperative and team-oriented work style, able to work well with Programme and other SIPRI colleagues.
