SIPRI is an independent international institute for research into problems of peace and conflict, especially those of arms control and disarmament. The working language of the institute is English. The SIPRI Military Expenditure Project, situated within the Military Expenditure and Arms Production Programme, is one of SIPRI's most long-standing projects, and has been collecting and analyzing military expenditure data since the 1960s. The SIPRI Military Expenditure Database, with data for over 160 countries back to 1988, is the only consistent, accurate source of military spending data with global coverage available. In recent years, in addition to its core data-based work, the military expenditure project has expanded into considering a wider range of issues, such as military budgeting processes, and the impact of military spending on development. The SIPRI project on military expenditure seeks applications for the position of Researcher, with a special focus on Latin America: Job description *Collecting and processing data on military expenditure in Latin America and other regions to be determined based on primary sources, including official sources of government budget and expenditure data, published on the Internet and elsewhere, government responses to our questionnaire, and input from the project network of experts in particular countries. *Producing analysis of military expenditure data and trends, in particular for Latin American countries, for inclusion in the SIPRI Yearbook and elsewhere. *Collecting and processing relevant economic data on all countries worldwide (GDP, price indexes, population) and entering into the SIPRI Military Expenditure database. *Reading and filing (in SIPRI's electronic filing system) relevant material on military expenditure from a variety of print and electronic sources. *Maintaining the SIPRI web pages relating to military expenditure, in conjunction with other members of the project. *Handling information requests on military expenditure. *Engaging in research and research consultancy work in areas relevant to the project for external funders. *Developing, in co-operation with the head of the military expenditure project, new areas for research relevant to the project. *Assisting the project leader in developing funding applications for the project. Person specification Essential characteristics *Possession of a postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline (including but not limited to Economics, Politics/International Relations, Statistics); or equivalent level of in-depth knowledge and understanding of relevant subjects. *Highly numerate, and able and willing to work with large volumes of data. *Fluent in written and spoken English *Either a good knowledge of written Spanish (so as to be able to work effectively with source material in Spanish) or an in-depth knowledge of Latin American economic, political and/or security issues. *Ability to write fluently at an academic level *An interest in and understanding of issues relating to international peace and security *An interest in working with military expenditure data *Good computer skills, including use of word processing and spreadsheet packages, and of using the internet to find and assess sources of information. *Ability to work independently and as part of a team *An international orientation Desirable characteristics *In possession of, or near completion of, a PhD in a relevant discipline *Good written and spoken Spanish
