The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is an independent international institute for research into problems of peace and conflict, especially those of arms control and disarmament. It ranks as one of the world's foremost research organizations focusing on international security and foreign affairs. SIPRI is seeking a Researcher/Research Assistant to join its newly-established China and Global Security Programme. The Programme seeks to advance contemporary China studies with a particular emphasis on China's role in global, non-traditional and transnational security. Through comprehensive research, analysis, policy-relevant publications and other outputs, including work with Chinese partners, the Programme will analyse China's increasingly important position in international security affairs, and help policymakers, opinion leaders, scholars, businesses and the general public more fully understand the foreign and security policy implications of China's role. The position will be based at the SIPRI headquarters outside of Stockholm, Sweden. The major responsibilities of this position will include: *Making substantive contributions to the Programme's research agenda and providing administrative support to Dr Bates Gill, SIPRI Director and Programme Leader, and other senior members of the Programme. *Monitoring current events and developments in the region, using primary (Chinese language) and secondary sources and providing regular updates on research findings. *Conducting specific research for articles, book chapters and other publications, as requested. *Assisting with the drafting of research publications and other Programme-related correspondence and briefings. *Assisting with the conceptualization of new research projects and funding initiatives and preparing fundraising proposals. *Managing project-based budgets and tracking monthly statements, as well as write-up of narratives and financial reports for research grants. *Coordinating events, including preparing invitations, travel arrangements, corresponding with the relevant counterparts, helping to prepare background research materials and providing other logistical assistance. *Providing administrative support on Programme outreach activities, including regular updates to the website. *Assisting on special projects, as requested. The successful candidate will have the following experience and preferred qualifications/skills: *A Master's degree in international relations, foreign affairs, or a related discipline, with a emphasis in China-related studies. * Outstanding academic credentials and at least two years of relevant professional experience. *Demonstrated interest and competence in the Programme's research agenda. *Excellent research, writing and editing skills. *Reading, writing and speaking fluency in the Chinese language. *Strong communication, organizational and planning skills, with attention to detail. *Strong working knowledge of standard office software, including web editing/HTML. *Cooperative and team-oriented work style, able to work well with Programme and other SIPRI colleagues.
