The Challenge Ahead
Senior/Lead Game Designers are responsible for devising what a game consists of and how it plays, following the vision of the Creative Director. They plan and define all the elements and components of a game, including its setting, structure, rules, story flow, characters, objects, vehicles, and devices available to the characters; interface design; and game modes.
Originality and creativity are valued, but a thorough knowledge of a game?s target audience and market is equally, if not more, important. Game Designers should also have a deep understanding of the capabilities and benefits of different hardware platforms (e.g., PC, console, mobile devices), as well as familiarity with software technologies and techniques appropriate to each platform.
It is the Senior/Lead Game Designer?s responsibility to ensure that the whole team understands and shares the original concept and vision of the game as outlined by the Creative Director. During development, the Game Designer makes adjustments to the original specification to respond to technical constraints and to incorporate new programming and art creation methods developed by the team. The Game Designer also trains testers to play the game, making sure that they understand what is expected of the finished product.
What a Game Designer does at EA:
-Provide insight into target audience and their gameplay expectations.
-Develop innovative gameplay concepts and accessible user experiences.
-Create clear and concise documentation that communicates the Game?s Design to the team.
-Create guidelines that define content creation requirements.
-Collaborate with design team and development team to create game systems, tools and content.
-Solicit and react to feedback, keeping the Game Design up to date.
-Tune and balance gameplay systems throughout production based on testing and feedback from the game team and user testing.
The next great Game Designer also needs:
-A minimum of 5 years Game Design experience.
-Have shipped at least 1 AAA title in a Game Design role.
-Experience with designing and balancing complex, interconnected systems is a must. Able to drive vision and function of these complex systems through production.
-Experience owning the design and implementation of a feature from concept-to-ship.
-Experience working with single and multiplayer experiences.
-A strong understanding of the challenges, requirements and best practices in console game development.
-Scripting experience to create gameplay situations/levels. Visual scripting experience a plus.
-Experience with leading user-testing sessions and proposing gameplay improvements.
-Experience guiding junior design team members.
-Excellent English-language verbal and written communication skills.
-Able to prototype gameplay concepts quickly.
-Experience working in a distributed development structure a plus.
-Passion for racing, driving or car culture a plus.
