Magnet Scientist

Arbetsbeskrivning

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Join a great team pushing the limits of superconducting accelerator magnets, to shape the future of CERN largest accelerator. CERN, take part!

You will join the Magnet Design and Technology (MDT) Section, part of the Superconductors and Cryostats (MSC) Group within the Technology (TE) Department, which is responsible for the superconducting magnet design and technology for the full range, from functional specification to the construction of short prototypes. The Section also designs the studies of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) upgrade and future projects, by involving superconducting magnets; performs superconducting magnet performance analysis and feedback on the design; maintains the Magnetic model of the LHC and provides support to beam commissioning and operation; is responsible for the superconducting magnet insulation development; and provides CERN-wide support for polymer casting and rapid prototyping.

Functions

As an experienced magnet engineer in the MDT Section, you will:
- Develop magnets for existing and future accelerators, from beam specifications, through conceptual design, engineering, prototyping and construction;
- Be a driving and innovative force in the development of new types of superconducting accelerator magnets and their technology, seizing opportunities for applications of the new technologies to other fields;
- Act as an expert user of design and analysis tools, including commercial and in-house software, and drive their development, evolution and application;
- Take initiatives for, and drive collaborative projects with other institutes;
- Lead teams of physicists, engineers and technicians working on superconducting accelerator magnet modelling, design and construction.

Qualifications

Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of applied physics, mechanical engineering or electrical engineering or a related field.

Experience:

We are looking for an expert professional in superconducting magnets with in-depth experience in their design and construction.
- Extensive, demonstrated and recognized experience in superconducting magnet design and construction.
- Mastery of electromagnetic, mechanical and thermal modelling, including customization and development.
- Demonstrated experience in leading magnet design and construction projects.
- Experience in leading combined teams of physicists, engineers and technicians.

Technical competencies:
- Design and modelling of superconducting magnets: in particular electro-mechanical and thermal modelling.
- Knowledge and application of computational methods and tools in electromagnetism: in particular electro-magnetic design of superconducting magnets.
- Design and analysis of mechanical structures.
- Knowledge of metals and alloys: composition, structure, properties, heat treatments: in particular those applicable in superconducting magnets.
- Project management.

Behavioural competencies:
- Solving problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them; anticipating obstacles; assessing alternative solutions in order to have a fall-back plan; assimilating large quantities of information, identifying key issues and formulating conclusions clearly and concisely.
- Leading with strength and credibility: demonstrating authority and being accountable for actions, decisions and effective functioning of the team; making timely decisions that balance systematic analysis with decisiveness; dealing with difficulties in a timely manner.
- Working in teams: supporting and acting in accordance with team decisions; accepting joint responsibility for team successes and shortcomings; building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships; understanding when teamwork is required to achieve the best results; including others accordingly and sharing information.
- Learning and sharing knowledge: keeping up-to-date with developments in own field of expertise and readily absorbing new information; sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others; coaching others to ensure knowledge transfer; proposing ways to improve or streamline existing procedures, processes and methodologies.

Language skills:

Fluency in spoken and written English or French: ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in one of the two languages, and undertaking to acquire the other language rapidly.
