Master students in RAMI analysis

Arbetsbeskrivning

The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for 2 Master students in RAMI analysis, one student for the Accelerator Division and one for the Integrated Control System Division.

Description of directorate/division
The Integrated Control Systems Division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of Control Systems for the whole ESS facility including Accelerator, Target, Neutron Scattering Instruments and Conventional Facilities, as well as of the Machine and Personnel Protection Systems. The demand for high availability and reliability of the facility for the neutron science users is a challenge for the Control Systems, and innovative solutions are needed.

The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of the ESS accelerator, a pulsed superconducting proton linac. Delivering an average beam power of 5 MW at 2 GeV on target, this linac will be instrumental in making ESS the world's most powerful neutron source.

Our work environment is characterised by fast growth and an international atmosphere with highly academic personnel. The work environment is exciting and forward thinking and relies heavily on personal initiative.

Description of main responsibilities
The need for a rigorous RAMI (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Inspectability) analysis prior to commissioning of a research facility such as ESS is apparent. Requirements on both machine performance and project costs should be optimized to meet the needs of the users and the budget of the project. Your role as a master student in RAMI analysis is to

• Collect (from literature and experts) the performance specifications and requirements of the different systems at the division
• Find appropriate failure rates of both components and systems
• Suggest a predictive, mathematical model for the overall system performance
• Apply this model to calculate some initial results on the RAMI performance of the division
• Suggest improvements, flaws, benefits etc. of the model

Qualifications

• Currently in an Engineering or Science program with focus on physics, mathematics, or electronics
• At least one year of Master level courses completed by the end of the semester
• Good knowledge of statistics and survival analysis (reliability theory) is beneficial
• Some technical knowledge or hands-on experience is beneficial
• Experience of working in an international environment is an advantage
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite

Duration & Start date
The duration is 1 semester (5 months). Start date is to be discussed, but we would like you to start no later than September 1 2015.

Application & Contact
Please provide your curriculum vitae and cover letter in English by clicking on “apply” and following the instructions. Please note we only accept applications via the ESS website.
The deadline for applications is 10th of May 2015.

For further information regarding the position, please contact Accelerator Reliability Expert, Enric Bargalló, enric.bargallo[at]esss.se.

We look forward to receiving your application.
