ESS is now looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer for the Technical Projects Group within the Neutron Scattering Systems (NSS) Project division. 

The NSS Project Division is responsible for construction and commissioning of the neutron beam instruments for the ESS. The scope of the division includes neutron detectors and data acquisition electronics, chopper systems, experiment control systems, electrical and service infrastructure, the neutron bunker (radiological shielding and infrastructure), and a test beamline.

The Technical Projects Group is responsible for management of engineering of the neutron beam instruments, design and manufacturing of the neutron bunker and radiation shielding, design support for common projects (such as choppers, detectors, beam monitors, motion and shutter systems), as well as delivery and integration of electrical infrastructure and instrument electrical systems.

Job description
As Mechanical Design Engineer for the Technical Projects Group you will be required to:


•  perform engineering designs of instrument mechanical subsystems, respecting principles of robust design and using CAD software, specifically CATIA V6
• establish detailed mechanical specifications based on scientific requirements and by liaising with the various stakeholders,


• Generate, maintain and update drawings in the ESS CATIA environment


• deliver mechanical engineering design in accordance with the ESS engineering processes
• analyze engineering problems using traditional analytical methods and FEA packages,
• Work independently and take responsibility for the design development
• prepare engineering documentation including quality assurance as appropriate
• participate and execute relevant reviews / validation,
• write technical specifications, perform market surveys and price enquiries to find appropriate suppliers.
• provide technical and administrative support during system testing, integration and commissioning.
• Some travelling is to be expected. 

In short we believe you have a strong interest in mechanical design and innovation, from modelling to  the  manufacturing  of  devices  and  systems.

An essential aspect is the close collaboration with various ESS stakeholders including the instrument project teams, instrument technology groups but also procurement and facility management.

Qualifications:
You are required to:


• Hold a master’s degree in engineering and have experience in mechanical engineering of complex engineering problems using 3D CAD software and FEA packages.
• Minimum 10 years of work experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer is required
• Experience in being the lead designer is an advantage  
• Experience from large-scale science projects is an advantage 
• Experience in neutron instrumentation, including sample environment systems, is a strong advantage, as is mechanical design experience from the nuclear industry
• Expert knowledge in CATIA, V5 is required, V6 an advantage
• Solid knowledge of engineering codes and standards is required

Duration & Location
This is a permanent position.

Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
