Sandvik is a global engineering group active in tooling, materials technology, mining and construction. Patents, trademarks and other intellectual property rights are vital and important elements of Sandvik’s business operations. Sandvik Intellectual Property AB (SIP) is part of Group Function Legal with global responsibility for the coordination of Group IP operations, including protecting IP and enforcing IP rights. We are now looking for a Patent Attorney to contribute to developing processes and ways of working within SIP and we offer you interesting opportunities for development in our large global company. This position is to be located in either Sandviken or Fagersta, and some travel between the locations is required.

Job Summary
As a Patent Attorney, your main objective is to provide counseling to Seco Tools and other product areas within Sandvik Machining Solutions (SMS), in particular by supporting R&D managers, product managers, project managers, inventors and resources at the R&D department, but also other parts of the business. You harvest and evaluate new inventions, prepare and prosecute patent applications and oppositions, monitor competitor’s activities, conduct freedom-to-operate investigations and enforce our patents to ensure that new products can be launched on the market, as well as to protect profit margins. You also contribute to increase the IP awareness by delivering IP education for relevant groups.

You assist the product area with their IP strategy development and play an active role in the patent processes of the product area. In this position, you report to the SMS Patent Manager within Sandvik Intellectual Property.

We are looking for someone with a Master of Science in Engineering, or other relevant academic experience. It is preferred that you also have successfully completed one or more parts of the European Qualifying Examination, or the equivalent. You have at least five years of IP experience, preferably within the engineering field, from private practice, other industry patent departments, the Patent Office or similar entities. Excellent knowledge of the patenting process, from idea to granted patent, and of opposition proceedings in at least one jurisdiction, are important, as is good knowledge of IP enforcement and competitor monitoring. Previous experience with cutting tool technology and products is preferred, as is experience from software-related inventions. Knowledge of Ipendo Platform or equivalent IP management systems is considered a plus. As we operate in a global setting, your English skills must be excellent, both verbally and in writing, while skills in Swedish are advantageous.
