PhD position in Computer Networking

A fully funded PhD position is available within the Distributed Systems and Communications (DISCO) Group at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Karlstad University.

Research within DISCO is focused on development of transport and application layer protocols, cross-layer interactions, networking techniques for low latency Internet communication and the design of future wireless access and backhaul systems, including Software Defined Networking (SDN).

Position
The position is focused on Software Defined Networking support for End nodes and Home gateways and the interaction with novel transport layer solutions. The candidate is expected to contribute to research within the EU H2020 project NEAT and the KK profile project HITS.

It is expected that the candidate performs research in the given area through a combination of analytical modelling, simulations and/or experimentation. Knowledge or experience in transport layer protocols (such as MPTCP), SDN and tools such as Matlab or network emulators such as CORE is therefore desirable. It is mandatory that applicants have already demonstrated knowledge of SDN controllers such as OpenDaylight, Pox or Nox. Excellent programming skills as well as good oral and written communication skills in English are required.

The candidate should be able to work independently, as well as in a team; and be enthusiastic about pushing the state-of-the-art. Collaboration with academic and industry partners through national/international research projects is expected.

Eligibility
Eligible for this position are candidates with a University degree of 240 ECTS, from which at least 60 ECTS were awarded for courses at advanced level and have a Master’s degree or the Swedish Magister or Civilingenjör Degrees in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or equivalent. Eligible are also those candidates who have achieved corresponding degrees or knowledge in Sweden or abroad.

Terms
The position is limited to 4 years, but can be prolonged for up to one more year, if the PhD student also takes over other research, teaching or administrative tasks besides her/his PhD research. Those tasks should not exceed 20% of the time of a full-time position. The earliest date for filling the position is the September 1, 2015.
