PhD position in Network Function Virtualization

Arbetsbeskrivning

Karlstad University takes pride in combining active external cooperation with academic excellence. Karlstad University has around 16 000 students and a staff of over 1 200 members.

Democratic principles, equality and diversity are cornerstones of the University. We value the enriching presence of diverse backgrounds and competencies among students and staff.

The Faculty of Health, Science and Technology has an opening for a full-time PhD position at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in the field of computer networking with focus on Network Function Virtualization (NFV).

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science consists of the two research subjects: Mathematics and Computer Science. It has a research and teaching staff of more than 60 persons. In Computer Science, research and education are focused on computer networking and distributed systems, computer security and privacy, and software engineering. Both research and education are conducted in close cooperation with international, national and regional partners from both academia and industry.

Computer Science is currently in the expansion phase to further strengthen its focus areas to consolidate and develop its international position in research. It has recently been established as an excellent research group at Karlstad University from which the funding for the expansion is provided to strengthen research. The Knowledge Foundation of Swedish has also granted additional funds to develop a research profile within the Computer Science focus areas in close collaboration with industry.

Eligibility

Eligible for this position are candidates with a University degree of 240 ECTS, from which at least 60 ECTS were awarded for courses at advanced level and have a Master’s degree or the Swedish Magister or Civilingenjör Degrees in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or equivalent. International applicants who have achieved corresponding/equivalent degrees are also eligible to apply.

Duties

The PhD student will work within the framework of the recently funded project, entitled “NFV-Optimizer: Profiling Network Virtualized Functions and Optimizing their Performance for Telecom Clouds” by the Knowledge Foundation of Sweden. NFV-Optimizer will model the impact of virtualization on Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) and study their behavior as well as their inter-relation complexities when they are cascaded to build higher-level frameworks for Network Function Virtualizations (NFVs). Together with our industry partners, our ultimate aim is to model, optimize, design, and implement NFV specific profiling/optimization frameworks to study VNF Service Chains (VNF-SCs), and efficiently optimize them to close the gap between their performance and those of currently deployed counterparts using proprietary boxes. For this post, the PhD student will work/collaborate closely with our industry partners in the project (Ericsson AB and VoerEir).

Due to the nature of activities in this project, good programming and technical skills are highly required. English is the working language in the research group, and thus good oral and written communication skills in English is also required. Collaboration with academic and industry partners through national/international research projects is also expected.

Terms

The position is limited to 4 years. However, if the PhD student takes other research, teaching or administrative tasks besides her/his PhD research, it can be prolonged for up to one more year. Those tasks should not exceed 20% of the time of a full-time position.

Admission

Admission is based on individual assessment of each candidate’s abilities to successfully pass the research education. The selected candidate can start immediately.
