A fully funded PhD position is available within the Software Engineering Research Group (SERG) at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Karlstad University.

The group’s research focuses on software quality in evolving systems and particularly on software architectural aspects in this context, such as software architecture degradation and technical debt. Close collaboration with industry and empirical evaluation of research results in practice are fundamental principles of SERG.

Position
The successful candidate is expected to perform his research as part of a European project on round-trip engineering and migration of software-intensive systems towards software product lines. In particular, the research is expected to integrate and extend existing software architecture recovery and consistency checking techniques towards this scenario. Moreover, these extended techniques will be prototypically implemented, integrated into a tool chain developed by the project consortium, and evaluated in collaboration with other academic and industrial project partners.

Very good knowledge and interest in the field of software engineering are required; knowledge in the field of software architecture is desirable but not mandatory. Excellent programming skills as well as very good oral and written communication skills in English are required.

The candidate should be able to work independently, as well as in a team; and be enthusiastic about pushing the state-of-the-art. Collaboration with academic and industry partners through national/international research projects is expected.

Eligibility
Eligible for this position are candidates with a University degree of 240 ECTS, from which at least 60 ECTS were awarded for courses at advanced level and have a Master’s degree or the Swedish Magister or Civilingenjör Degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or equivalent. Eligible are also those candidates who have achieved corresponding degrees or knowledge in Sweden or abroad.

Terms
The position is limited to 4 years, but can be prolonged for up to one more year, if the PhD student also takes over other research, teaching or administrative tasks besides her/his PhD research. Those tasks should not exceed 20% of the time of a full-time position. The earliest date for filling the position is January 1, 2017.

Admission
Admission is based on individual assessment of the candidates’ abilities to successfully pass the research education.
