PhD student in Space Physics

Arbetsbeskrivning

The position is related to suprathermal particle energization at shocks

Applications are invited for a PhD student position to study suprathermal particle energization at shocks. Shocks are believed to be one of the most efficient particle accelerators in astrophysical plasma. Understanding particle acceleration to energies well above thermal energies (suprathermal) is one of the most important questions in astrophysical and space sciences. The new PhD student will study the waves and turbulence upstream and downstream of quasi-parallel shocks as the source of suprathermal ion acceleration. The student will work directly with experimental data from the international ESA multi-spacecraft mission Cluster and at a later stage data from the NASA mission MMS.

The position is available at the Uppsala office of the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF), located at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden, starting at the latest in the second half of 2014 for a total duration of four years. The PhD student will belong to the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University and must therefore fulfill the university requirements. Information on the research education is available at http://www.physics.uu.se and http://www.teknat.uu.se. Information on research at IRF Uppsala can be found at http://www.irfu.se. The Swedish National Space Board and Uppsala University fund the position.
