Arbetsbeskrivning
The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience focuses on research, innovation and education within the fields of future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems. A close collaboration with Swedish and international partners within academy, industry and society enables scientific excellence and creates an innovative environment. In addition to the 200 researchers and Ph D students, MC2 houses a cleanroom for micro- and nanofabrication with the latest equipment.
Information about the research/the project/the division
Graphene promises improved functionalities for many applications thanks to its exceptional electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of graphene is the only up-scalable process that is both inexpensive and adjustable to the nowadays semiconductor-industry process flow allowing for an uncomplicated integration of graphene in existing electronic components. CVD allows for large areas of graphene on any substrate. The focus of our research is on development of a reliable- and cost-effective platform for CVD of graphene which is comparable in quality with graphene obtained by e. g. mechanical exfoliation of graphite or epitaxial growth on SiC. Easily scalable CVD graphene can then be used for fundamental studies and in practical devices, like field-effect transistors, light-emitting diodes, and mass-sensitive nano-electromechanical resonators.
Major responsibilities
• Systematic study and optimization of deposition of graphene and BN on different catalysts.
• Transfer of graphene onto target substrates. Tailor making multilayers.
• Characterization of obtained layers by Atomic-Force-, Raman-, and Scanning-Electron Microscopy.
• Microfabrication of structures in the clean-room environment using photo- and e-beam lithography, metal-deposition-, and ion-etching equipment.
• Transport measurements in the magnetic field.
• Analysis of data and writing reports/articles.
Your major responsibilities as PhD student is to pursue your doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The position generally includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of full-time employment time.
Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
Qualifications
You are a highly motivated, energetic, self-propelling, and skilled person. You stay motivated and efficient despite setbacks. You must have master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in Physics or Engineering Physics with a solid background in Math and Solid State Physics. You should be fluent in English, have good collaborative skills and ability to communicate your results in writing and presentations, also to non-experts. If Swedish is not your native language, you should take action on learning it and be able to teach in Swedish in two years. To help you out, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
Prior experience in AFM and/or Raman techniques, basic University-level knoweledge of Chemistry, computer programming skills in MatLab, COMSOL, LabVIEW, etc. are additional merits.
