PhD student position in MMIC oscillator design and modeling

Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the division
A PhD position is available within the GigaHertz centre at Chalmers University of Technology. The GigaHertz centre is a joint research center between Chalmers and industry. The work will therefore be carried out in close collaboration with our industrial partners. The GigaHertz centre is a part of the Microwave Electronics Laboratory at Chalmers with a world leading microwave characterization lab and clean room facilities.

Job description
The position aims at designing fixed-frequency oscillators and voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) in GaN HEMT technology, with a particular focus on MMIC implementations. MMIC design in Chalmers’ in-house GaN HEMT process as well as leading commercial foundries is in the project plan.

Beside design, the work incorporates also investigation of factors limiting performance of circuits. Such factors are low-frequency noise properties of transistors as well as finite quality factor and modulation noise in varactors. The varactor modulation noise is of particular importance in design of wideband VCOs. Special design of the varactor can be considered within the frame of this position.
The majority of your working time is devoted to your own research studies. A PhD student is also expected to develop own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, the position will normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

The employment is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
The applicant should have a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or Applied Physics, preferably with knowledge in microwave electronics and/or solid state physics. You should be a good team player and have an ability to take initiative. Experience in oscillator design and phase noise measurements is highly valuated.

The undergraduates are normally taught in Swedish, although the graduate level teaching is in English. Thus good language skills are required. Applicants who do not have Swedish as native language should be able to teach in Swedish after two years of employment.

Application procedure
The application should be marked with Ref 20130167 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically and be attached as pdf-files, as below:

• Application: (Please name the appendix in the e-recruitment system as: APPLICATION, Surname, reference number)
