Postdoc in the field of Plasma & Coating Physics

Arbetsbeskrivning

We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!
We are now looking to appoint a postdoc in the field of Plasma & Coating Physics.

Work assignments

Synthesis of complex nanoparticles are an important base for the development of new materials for a wide range of applications that are of great importance for societal development. One such application is the field of energy generation, transfer, and storage that will be greatly facilitated by new smart designed catalytically active materials. Gas-phase synthesis of nanoparticles has shown to be a very versatile method of producing complex nanoparticles. Alloy, core/shell, and core/satellite nanoparticles can be synthesized and assembled into new nano-micro-structured materials. To in detail study the synthesis of these nanostructures, this project will adopt in situ analysis techniques based on brilliant X-ray sources, such as from the synchrotron facility PETRA III in Hamburg. A specially designed synthesis chamber will be built, allowing the use of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), anomalous SAXS (ASAXS), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF), for in situ time-resolved structural, chemical, and spatial analyses of complex nanoparticles during synthesis.

You will work in a team of material scientists and physicists to take part in the experimental design, implementation and in performing experiments of novel complex nanoparticle synthesis using high-power pulsed hollow cathode sputtering. The experiment will involve both in situ analysis of the synthesis process and ex situ and in situ analysis of the synthesized nanoparticles. The responsibility of the postdoc will mainly be focused on the in situ analyses using a synchrotron based brilliant X-ray source, but will also be involved in ex situ analysis of the formed nanostructures using, for example, electron microscopy.

As postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.

Qualifications

To be qualified to take employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree.  This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you.

It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree – such as taking statutory leave – then these may be taken into consideration.

We are seeking applicants who have an experimental materials science background with special experience in synchrotron-based analysis techniques. Experience of plasma techniques, such as sputtering for the synthesis of nanoparticles or thin films, will be viewed as a merit.

You should also have shown the ability to work in teams with scientist of other skills, formulating scientific hypotheses, and reporting on scientific results orally and in scientific publications.

The workplace

You will be employed in the Plasma & Coating Division at Linköping University (with main workplace at Campus Valla, Linköping, Sweden). The synchrotron facility used will be PETRA III in Hamburg, Germany.

The employment

This post is a temporary contract of two years with the possibility of extension up to a total maximum of three years. The position as a postdoc is full-time.

Starting date
As agreed upon, but not later than January 2024.
