Description of the work
Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab, www.scilifelab.se) is a national resource centre dedicated to large-scale research in molecular biosciences and medicine. SciLifeLab is a collaboration effort between four universities in Stockholm and Uppsala: Stockholm University, the Karolinska Institutet, the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and Uppsala University. The SciLifeLab centre combines advanced technical know-how and state-of-the-art equipment with a broad knowledge in translational medicine and molecular bioscience. The clinical proteomics mass spectrometry group at Science for Life Laboratory (Stockholm) is equipped with the latest peptide separation techniques and mass spectrometry instrumentation including a suit of mass spectrometers (Orbitrap Velos, Q-Exactive Thermo), high resolution QTOF (Agilent), MALDI-TOF/TOF and tripleQ (Agilent). In collaboration with Dr Janne Lehtiö´s research group at Science for Life Laboratory (Stockholm) we shall develop and use proteomics methods for clinical applications.

The Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM, cmm.ki.se) at the Karolinska University Hospital/Karolinska Institutet is a research center with a focus on chronic inflammatory diseases. Our Pediatric rheumatology research group (cmm.ki.se/en/Research/Inflammatory-Diseases/Rheumatology-Unit/Innate-Inflammation) is located at the CMM Rheumatology Research Laboratory performing translational research on inflammatory processes in rheumatic diseases. The specific purpose of our studies is to explore functions and regulation of the endogenous, inflammatory mediator HMGB1 – the prototypic alarmin molecule. We apply our molecular knowledge for diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic use. Biological functions mediated by HMGB1 isotype forms are regulated by well-defined post-translational modifications of the molecule.

Tasks
A post doctoral position is now open for a highly motivated scientist with a strong background in targeted mass spectrometry (MRM/SRM). The project will focus on development and application of LC-MS/MS analysis methods for post-translational modifications of HMGB1. The biological and clinical focus of the project is in the field of inflammation. The position is full-time, and the time period will be from 2013-10-15 – 2014-12-31, with possibility of extension.

Qualifications
To qualify, the applicant must hold a doctor’s degree or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a doctorate in the field of analytical chemistry, biochemistry or other related relevant field. Postgraduates who have yet to graduate may apply if their public defense is scheduled to take place within three months after the application deadline, in which case verification from the Dissertation Committee or equivalent body must be submitted with the application. Experience of research work in peptide and protein chemistry, nano-chromatrography and peptide mass spectrometry is a requirement. Experience of quantitative proteomics and targeted mass spectrometry is needed.
The candidate must also have basic knowledge in statistics and usage of various MS-analysis software packages. Fluency in English is a requirement.
