Arbetsbeskrivning

The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a "Postdoc Shielding and Radio protection".

Description of directorate/division
The Target Station Division is responsible for:
- The various systems converting the high energy proton beam coming from the linear accelerator into low energy neutron beams distributed to the 22 experimental areas, so called instruments:

• Target (proton-to-neutron convertor)

• Moderators-reflectors (converting the high energy neutrons into low energy neutrons required by instruments)

• Shielding (protecting operators and experimentalists working around these systems)

- The ancillaries and utilities necessary to operate and maintain these systems, including the nuclear safety classified systems.

Description of main responsibilities
You will work in the Neutronic group of the Target division in performing high-quality shielding design calculations of the various systems of the ESS facility, by means of different techniques, including Monte Carlo and point-kernel methods. The tasks include determination of the shielding materials, geometry configuration and thickness, calculation of radiation attenuation, dose rates and determination of activation of shielding and other components. You will be using computational tools for activation calculation such as MCNPX and coupled depletion codes like CINDER and you will be working on development of computational tools for improved shielding and radioprotection calculations. Integration of the results with the design efforts from other teams of the Target division, Accelerator division, and Conventional Facilities is an essential part of the work.

Qualifications
Technical competencies:

• PhD in nuclear or particle physics, or similar fields

• Familiar with physics of spallation neutron source and radiation transport

• Experience in using Monte Carlo transport codes such as MCNPX, FLUKA and PHITS

• Experience in statistical analysis of data

• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite

• Experience of working in an international environment is essential
