Postdoctoral fellow in Medical science

Arbetsbeskrivning

Postdoctoral fellow in Medical science, specifically bioinformatics and cancer genomics.

Location: Institute of Biomedicine, Göteborg

Subject area
Medical science, specifically bioinformatics and cancer genomics.
Specific subject description
The discovery of microRNAs has greatly increased the appreciation for non-coding RNA beyond classical RNA genes such as ribosomal and transfer RNA, and it has recently become clear that so called long non-coding RNAs rival protein-coding genes in number. The vast majority of these molecules remain uncharacterized, but an increasing number of reports point to important functions in cell physiology and pathology, including cancer. Using bioinformatical methods, we are currently tackling several exciting questions in relation to human non-coding RNAs, ranging from basic studies to applied large-scale cancer genomics. We collaborate with wet-lab biologists in the near environment and elsewhere.

Job assignments

We seek a motivated postdoctoral researcher with a background in bioinformatics and genomics, to undertake projects related to non-coding RNAs and cancer biology. The postdoctoral fellow will make use of available data, including high-throughput sequencing datasets from international cancer genomics consortia, to study patterns of somatic alteration of non-coding RNAs in cancer. The project may also include development of novel software tools and methodology. The work is expected to be carried out indendently in dialogue with coworkers and collaborators.
Eligibility
An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at University of Gothenburg. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. The postdoctoral fellowship is primarily aimed at applicants who have obtained their doctoral degree less than three years prior to the end of the application period.

Assessment

Priority will be given to applicants with hands-on experience with applied bioinformatics. Familiarity with scripting languages such as perl, as well as Matlab or R, is desirable. Experience from relevant biological fields and familiarity with wet laboratory work is desirable but not necessary. Previous experience with next-generation sequencing is a merit. Excellent communicative skills are required, including fluency in oral and written English.
