Postdoctoral position in Nano-Particle Self-Assembly

Arbetsbeskrivning

Project Description
It is hard to imagine superfast and omnipresent electronic devices, information technology, the Internet and mobile communication technologies without access to continuously cheaper and miniaturized microprocessors. The giant leaps in performance of microprocessors from the first personal computing machines to todays mobile devices are to a large extent realized via miniaturization of the active components. The ultimate limit of miniaturization of electronic components is the realization of single molecule electronics.

Due to fundamental physical limitations, single molecule resolution cannot be achieved using classical top-down lithographic techniques. At the same time, existing surface functionalization schemes do not provide any means of placing a single molecule with high precision at a specific location on a nanostructure.

This project has the ambitious goal of establishing the first method ever allowing for self-assembly of multiple single molecule devices in a parallel way.

Major responsibilities
The goal of the ERC Starting grant project (SIMONE) is to assemble functionalized nanoparticles at surfaces for single molecule electronics applications.

Key parts of this post doc project will be

• Synthesis and characterisation of nanoparticles
• Development of methods for single molecule functionalisation of nanoparticles
• Development of methods for directed, template assisted self-assembly of particles at surfaces

The post-doctoral associate will join a team of ambitious scientists working on the common goal of developing a parallel fabrication method for single molecule electronics applications.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
To qualify for the position, you must have a doctoral degree in Nano-Science, Physical Chemistry, Chemistry, Physics, Nano-Science or Materials science; the degree should generally not be older than three years. You should have experience with synthesis and functionalisation of nanoparticles. Hands-on experience with template directed self-assembly is meriting.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.

Information about the Department
This is about our lives and natural resources, about energy, materials recycling and materials development. With our focus on sustainable development we work with research and education of the highest quality for smarter materials and smarter processes, for improved health and a better environment.

We have approximately 300 employees, divided into four research divisions and one administrative unit. We are situated at campus Johanneberg.

Our department is characterized by inspiring world-leading research, in an environment of personal development and creation of new knowledge.

Information about the research group
At the "Molecular Materials" Group at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden we design and synthesize new self-assembled materials. Based on a small molecule approach, the aim is to make materials for a broad range of applications ranging from single molecule electronics to sensors and energy storage technologies.

Application procedure
The application should be marked with Ref 20150161 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically via Chalmers webpage.

Application deadline: May 30, 2015
