The Accelerator Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Power Electronics Engineer.

Description of directorate/division
The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of the ESS accelerator. The pulsed superconducting Linac, to be built in Lund, will produce a 5 MW average power proton beam, driving the world’s most powerful neutron source. The RF group is responsible for the design, procurement, installation, test, commissioning and operation of the RF systems required for the whole ESS accelerator.

Description of main responsibilities
As a Power Electronics Engineer your main responsibilities will be to assist in the design, specification, procurement, installation, testing, commissioning and later operation of the power converters needed to feed the RF sources in the ESS Linac. Various types of power converters will be required including the High Voltage pulsed klystron modulators and the High Voltage pulsed power supplies for IOT’s.

The work related to this position will include activities such as writing technical specifications, follow up of industrial contracts, supervision of factory acceptance tests at the constructor premises, set up of test benches at ESS and development and execution of test and measure procedures.

Skills, competences and experience
To be successful in this position we believe you have a master's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent and several years of practical experience in designing and testing modern power converters for industrial or physics applications and/or in writing technical specifications and follow up of industrial contracts.

Further experience with High Voltage power electronics and pulsed power systems for particle accelerators would be a significant advantage.

Experience of project management within the technical fields mentioned above, particularly if developed within the scope of large physics projects, would be a plus.

The following specific skills and competences are required for this position:



• Knowledge of modern power electronic structures like AC/DC, DC/DC and DC/AC switch mode converters;

• Dimensioning of power electronic sub-systems (power stacks, passive filters, etc.) and specification of their main components like:- transformers, inductors, capacitors, EMC filters, current and voltage sensors, etc;

• Simulation of power converter systems using software tools like Matlab/Simulink, PSPICE, Saber, Simplorer, etc;

• Knowledge of control techniques applied to power electronics;

• Implementation of analog signal conditioning electronics:- electronic functions with OPAMP’s, analog filtering techniques, analog control functions (ex: PI and PID), comparator functions, etc.;

The following skills and competences would be desirable:



• Implementation of digital signal conditioning and digital controllers applied to power electronic systems using modern programmable devices like FPGA’s, DSP’s, microprocessors, etc;

• Some knowledge of the European and worldwide companies providing power converter systems for the applications mentioned above.

Strong communication, team work and collaboration skills are a must. Your English skills are excellent both spoken and written.

The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
