The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as disease ecology.
The marine phytoplankton ecology and applications research group in Kalmar seeks a project assistant for studies of the ecology of marine phytoplankton and bacteria.

The employment is 50% and lasts 6 months. Access as soon as possible.
Project description
Our research team works within the complex and fascinating world of phytoplankton, and studies the role of bio- and chemical interactions among marine microbes in shaping plankton food webs. In the current project sampling, laboratory and data analyses will be performed to quantify cell abundances of bacteria and phytoplankton from our environmental monitoring stations, field sampling and laboratory experiments. The position will include interaction and collaboration with multiple researchers within the research team ranging from undergraduate students to postdocs as well as participation in scientific dissemination.
The research project is part of of the Centre for Ecology and Evolution in Microbial model Systems (EEMiS) at Linnaeus University that comprises expertise in ecology, evolution, and microbiology. The research is also connected to the Strong Research Environment ECOCHANGE.
Entry requirements
A person fulfils the general entry requirements if she/he has;
• Undergraduate studies in a related field.
• Experience of good laboratory practice.
• Documented experience of using flow cytometry to enumerate autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria from aquatic samples.
• Experience with instructing new users to flow cytometry and downstream data analysis.
Other assessment grounds;
• High proficiency in written and spoken English and Swedish.
• Ability to work independently to solve problems.
• Capacity to interact well in a research group (i.e. team work).
• Drivers licence B
