Research assistant in Aquatic Ecology

Arbetsbeskrivning

Do you want to work in an inspiring environment and contribute to the sustainable use of our seas, lakes and watercourses? We at the Department of Aquatic Resources (SLU Aqua) are passionate about our vision of "strong fish stocks in healthy waters". We are growing, and looking for employees who want to develop and make a difference together with us.

The Department of Aquatic Resources develops the knowledge on limnic and marine ecology. We conduct research, education, environmental analysis, and develop scientific advice in aquatic ecology with a focus on fish, fisheries and ecosystems. The department is SLU's largest and has more than 180 employees at three main locations: Lysekil, Öregrund and Stockholm (Drottningholm), as well as four field stations.

Our department is characterized by close societal collaboration and outreach. This creates a vital research environment and gives us unique opportunities to develop knowledge that is close to management and directly applicable in practice. Welcome to visit us at www.slu.se/aquaticresources!

We are looking for a knowledgeable and motivated research assistant to SLU Aqua in Öregrund to contribute to our research on climate change effects on oceans, lakes and coastal ecosystems.

Duties:
Aquatic ecology and climate change

You will be part of our team working on dynamics of fish communities and aquatic food webs, and their responses to climate change, exploitation and other human pressures (www.slu.se/fishinfoodwebs).

You will carry out laboratory work on preparation and analyses of samples collected in experiments and in the field with the purpose to study effects of variation in the local environment, e.g. in temperature and water color, on fish.

The selected candidate is required to assist in research concerning fish, zooplankton and zoobenthos. The candidate may also be involved in field work activities. Specific duties include identification and measurements of zooplankton, and preparing samples of fish, zooplankton and zoobenthos for analyses of stable isotopes.

Qualifications:
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic person, preferably holding a BSc or MSc degree in limnology, aquatic or marine ecology. Knowledge of and skills in identification of zooplankton are desirable. Experience of zooplankton identification and knowledge about aquatic animal organisms are considered important merits. Experience of sample preparation for analyses of stable isotopes is also considered a merit. We place great emphasis on personal qualities such as ability to work in teams and especially on personal suitability for the specific tasks to be carried out in the project.
