The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is an independent international institute for research into problems of peace and conflict, especially those of international security, armaments and disarmament. It ranks as one of the world's foremost research organizations focusing on international security and foreign affairs. Armed Conflicts and Conflict Management Programme The study of armed conflicts is a longstanding element of SIPRI's work since its foundation in 1966. Today, the Programme on Armed Conflict and Conflict Management provides the main platform within SIPRI for critical research, analysis, and recommendations in relation to the nature, major actors, and overall trends in conflict and armed violence, peace operations, and post-conflict peace building activities. Programme Leader Role SIPRI seeks a highly-regarded, dynamic, and experienced individual to lead its Programme on Armed Conflicts and Conflict Management. The successful candidate will lead and manage a team to conceive, design and implement research and capacity-building projects relating to armed conflicts and the efforts to prevent, manage and resolve conflict. The Programme Leader will apply her/his academic and/or policy related experience, strong analytical capabilities, and demonstrated leadership skills on these issues to lead and motivate Programme staff to develop and fund innovative proposals and deliver world-class programmes and research, while also working synergistically with other SIPRI Programmes. She/he will be strongly encouraged to actively publish, and to take advantage of SIPRI's world-class editorial and publishing team and our relationship with Oxford University Press. The Programme Leader will have an important role as part of the SIPRI senior leadership team. Most importantly, the Programme Leader will have the exceptional opportunity to build from the strengths, networks, and global reputation already in place for SIPRI and the Programme to establish one of the strongest programmes on armed conflict and conflict management in Europe and the world. Requirements The successful candidate will have: *A minimum of five to seven years of experience at a senior level in academic research and/or policy related work in this field, including a record of high quality (peer-reviewed) publications; *A deep understanding of, and experience in the analysis of contemporary patterns of armed conflict worldwide and the evolution of international responses, including notably institutional roles and multilateral initiatives; *Demonstrated success as a programme leader and team manager, including the ability to set an integrated strategic agenda for programme development, supervise and mentor staff, generate external funding, cooperate with other programmes, conduct media outreach, and brief relevant policy communities; *Strong relationship building skills with developed networks with relevant government and non-government institutions working in this field; *Effective communication skills, ability to speak and write fluently in English and to produce materials for the SIPRI Yearbook and other publications; working fluency in other languages important for the study of conflict and conflict management is strongly desired, but not necessary; *A higher degree in international relations, peace and conflict studies, political science or related discipline (Ph.D. preferred, but not a requirement); *A commitment to hold the post for a minimum of two years, and preferably longer.
