Arbetsbeskrivning

The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 37 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

Researcher
Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 2 years
Extent: 100 %

Location: Institute of Biomedicine, Gothenburg
First day of employment: As agreed
Reference number: PET 2016/379

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.
The Institute is composed of the following five departments:
. The Department of Infectious Diseases
. The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
. The Department of Pathology and Genetics
. The Department of Clinical Chemistry and Transfusion Medicine
. The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
At present, the institute has about 350 employees and approximately 290 million SEK in total assets.

Job assignments
As a scientist in our research group, you will work with different aspects of cell biology during development, including the function of long non-coding RNA molecules, using the fruit fly (Drosophila) as a model organism. You will employ genetic and molecular methods in the fly, e.g. the CRISPR/CAS9 system, as well as advanced imaging techniques to study tissue and cells in fixed and live animals. The research focuses on the formation of functional epithelial organs, in order to identify fundamental biological principles that govern organ development and epithelial integrity.

Qualifications
Applicants should have a PhD degree and a postdoc training of minimum 2 years in confocal imaging on cellular processes. The applicant should have a strong drive and motivation to independently carry out research, and be skilled at writing scientific articles and reports in English. Mastering the English language both written and orally is a requirement. Emphasis will also be placed on personal assets, such as ability to collaborate and a genuine research interest.
