The Division of Fluid Mechanics at Luleå University of Technology, Luleå, Sweden, has a position available for a researcher in mathematical modelling of fluid mechanics for two years 2010-2011.


Fluid flow takes place in a number of industrial and natural processes and in order to properly understand and predict the physical processes taking place in this context, modern tools like CFD and PIV need to be complemented with more or less advanced mathematical models.The particular goals of this project is thus to develop network models for flow in multi-scale porous media where computations of the detailed flow is carried out with CFD.Focus is on drying of iron ore pellets but the methodology may apply to any porous media flow such as that through reactive filters and embankment dams.The modelling may comprise free surface flow, the transport of bubbles and particles and heat and mass transfer.In overall our aim is to expand our successful work in the area of porous media flow and understand the processes studied.

We seek a Research candidate with a PhD in Mathematical modelling of physical processes or similar, preferably with a strong interest or experience within fluid mechanics in general and porous media and free surface flows in particular.Hence, knowledge of statistical methods and methods to model free surface flows is a merit.You should be a good team player and have an ability to take initiative and be able to be flexible to work in different places.Knowledge of the Swedish language is of importance since part of the work will be carried out together with Swedish industry and there will be 20% of teaching.The project is financed by LKAB and Luleå University of Technology.
