The Department of Aquatic Resources conducts environmental monitoring and assessment, consulting, research and education in aquatic ecology with focus on fish and shellfish. The department is SLU's largest and has more than 180 employees at three main locations: Lysekil, Öregrund and Stockholm (Drottningholm), as well as four field stations.

The department is highly focused on data collection and analysis of fish, fisheries and ecosystems, and is characterized by intensive collaborations with industry, public agencies and NGO:s. Background:

SLU received a new vessel R/V Svea in 2019, with state-of-the-art of acoustic equipment (specifications: https://bit.ly/2Y5XE6s). The multi-frequency EK80-system improves the ability to distinguish different fish species and the sonars and multibeams will enable us to locate, track, and observe fish behavior and abundance at an unprecedented level of detail. SLU also owns an unmanned surface vessel (Sailbuoy) with an echo-sounder for long-term scientific missions. Our vision is that R/V Svea combined with marine drones can take us to a new level of knowledge where acoustic technology is applied for a broad range of questions within fish, fisheries and marine ecosystem research and management.Describe the most important parts of the work and areas of responsibility. Duties:
You will be a part of a team of highly motivated scientists and technical personnel at the institute. Your main responsibility will be to initiate and lead a number of projects in which the new research technology at R/V Svea is utilized. These projects will be defined by the applicant in discussions with the lab leadership and national and international end users and scientific partners, and may eventually be transformed into new long-term monitoring programs. Active scientific publishing and collaborations with leading international scientists within the field is required.

Qualifications:
We are looking for someone with extensive experience in acoustic data collection and analysis. A PhD in acoustics or documented  experience from research in the field is required.

You should have experience in running your own projects. Experience of leading groups is preferable. You should be able to meet deadlines, quickly familiarizing yourself with new problem areas, and identifying the key scientific issues. We put great emphasis on your personal qualities and work experiences. It is important you have a good ability to interact with others and be able to work both independently and in group. In this position you will need to speak and write fluently in English. Knowledge of Swedish is not essential but will be favorably considered. If you do not yet speak Swedish, you are expected to start learning the language soon after you start your position. The position will include time onboard vessels.
