The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Senior Software Engineer - Embedded Systems / Control Systems

Description of directorate/division
The Electrical Engineering Group is part of the Neutron Technologies Division and dedicated to provide and support key components and technologies required for the construction and operation of the facilities scientific instruments. The group will compose engineers and technicians of different areas of expertise, responsible for the evaluation, installation, operation and maintenance of electrical, safety interlock and motion/automation control systems on all instruments.
Group members will operate within the stimulating environment of the scientific research, working closely with instrument engineers and scientists to define specifications and solutions required for the construction of the facilities world-leading suite of neutron scattering instruments. 

Description of main responsibilities
The successful candidate will work with creation, development and support of SW solutions in motion control and industrial automation for the ESS Neutron Scattering Instrumentation:


• Define, develop, test and deploy software packages to integrate dedicated motion control units and automation devices into the ESS Integrated Control System (ICS); be the key interface person to the ICS.

• Support the HW-Engineers in the evaluation process to develop a standardised motion control system as an expert for the programming on the embedded-systems level

• Continuously integrate special cutting-edge requirements and performance improvements into the motion control system

• Coordinate the SW development in that areas with collaborations in- and outside the institute

• Compile the documentation and transfer the know-how necessary for installation and service to the technical personnel

• Key contact person for that technology competence in the operations phase 

Qualifications
Technical competencies:


• Engineers degree in electronics, computer sciences or similar

• Long time experience in real-time programming in embedded systems and networks, pref. RS232 and TCP/IP-interfaces

• Programming languages: C in an embedded Linux environment, Java or Python is a plus

• Deep knowledge of programming and testing procedures in industrial applications

• As this position implies working on the interface between software and electronics interdisciplinary comprehension and knowledge are essential 

• Experience with FPGA (VHDL) and DSP is a plus

• Knowledge of open-source control systems like EPICS or TANGO is a plus

Strong communication, teamwork and collaboration skills are a must. You are proud of your work, set high standard for quality and quantity and constantly keep you up-to-date by connecting to the open source community. Your high level of analytic expertise and practical experience allows you to consult and guide internal and external staff and enforce the developed technical standards. Excellent oral and written English skills are a pre-requisite.  

The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
