Structural Civil Engineer

Arbetsbeskrivning

Company Description:
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description/Introduction:
Are you a structural civil engineer in the field of concrete, metallic structures, or underground works with organizational and technical skills? Do you enjoy structural calculation and preliminary design? Then, make your contribution to new or existing construction on the CERN sites in Switzerland and France within the most unique particle physics laboratory in the world: CERN. Take part!

You will join the Technical office and Geomatics Section (SCE-SAM-TG) within the Site Asset Management (SAM) Group of the Site and Civil Engineering (SCE) Department, whose members participate in design, drafting and calculation support for maintenance and works for tertiary and industrial buildings. You can find further information at SAM MANDATE | SCE (cern.ch)

Functions:
As Structural Civil Engineer, you will participate to provide design, drafting and calculation support to the department and users. You will be associated to feasibility/preliminary studies and execution phase of new projects by checking or modifying existing structures, both in surface buildings and underground work.

You will:
- Perform feasibility and design studies, dimensioning and calculations, including seismic action, for civil engineering structures (surface buildings, underground installations, roads and networks)
- Prepare and supervise design/coordination drawings for new construction or renovation projects in Revit (formwork and reinforcement drawings for concrete structures, and steel-frame construction drawings)
- Manage "Structure design" frame contracts
- Deal with structural modifications of existing installations in collaboration with CERN users
- Participate to the infrastructure consolidation programme (technical proposals for consolidation and maintenance plan, building diagnostics and pathology work monitoring)
- Participate to the BIM management process
- Draft specifications for invitations to tender following established procedures, in collaboration with the Purchasing service
- Participate to finished works inspections, siting layout and surveying of new structures.

Qualifications:
Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of civil engineering design or a related field.

Experience:
Demonstrated experience in the design and calculation in the field of civil engineering, in particular:
- Reinforced and prestressed concrete
- Metallic structures
- Special works as diaphragm or Berlin wall
- Road design
- Structures monitoring
- Cost estimates of the related works
- Feasibility / preliminary studies

Good knowledge of underground design and works such as technical galleries, tunnels, as well as caverns.

Technical competencies:
- Design and analysis of mechanical structures: design and calculation of civil engineer structures, by hand and using calculation software
- Design of industrial buildings: design of tertiary and industrial civil engineering buildings,
- Design of civil buildings: management of preliminary studies with integration of technical services
- Cost control: cost estimation
- Preparation of design drawings on Revit/Autocad

Behavioural competencies:
- Working in Teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships
-Achieving Results: delivering prompt and efficient service taking into account customer needs
- Solving Problems: producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements
