We now offer an exciting opportunity for a leader with passion, expertise and experience in Drug Discovery, Medicinal Chemistry, leading teams and developing individuals. You will have a key role as a team leader with the opportunity to impact our future portfolio and drug discovery programs across disciplines, both internally and through collaborations with leading academic institutions and biotech companies. As a member of the Medicinal Chemistry Leadership team you will lead and influence the direction of strategic and operational aspects within the department. The role is based at AstraZeneca's dynamic R&D site in Gothenburg Sweden.

The Medicinal Chemistry Department within Early CVRM is a critical player in the discovery and design of our drug molecules and in identifying and validating novel biological targets. We are agnostic to molecular modality and utilizes an array of therapeutic approaches including small molecules, peptides, oligonucleotides and PROTAC's to modulate disease and bring life changing medicines to patients. We drive our pipeline and areas of scientific leadership with partnerships and alliances with world experts which provides you, as a scientist and team leader, with the opportunity to access the most advanced knowledge, tools and opportunities to stay at the forefront of scientific research. You will be part of a stimulating and collaborative environment where scientific questions are addressed in an innovative way.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

In this role you will lead a team of creative, openminded and experienced Medicinal Chemists and be a key member of the Medicinal Chemistry department leadership team. As team leader you will be responsible for the performance of your team to ensure that expectations on high quality project contribution are met. You are also responsible for individual development of the team members. Active participation and contribution to the scientific development of our drug research programs across the portfolio is also an important part of the role, requiring an understanding of the therapeutic needs of the CVRM disease area. You will lead Medicinal Chemistry in projects across various phases in the discovery phase and provide strong influence across the disciplines in the project core team to ensure state of the art approaches in medicinal chemistry and beyond are used to answer the scientific hypotheses. You will continue to demonstrate scientific leadership through high quality publications, conference presentations and by building networks with key opinion leaders and academic groups.

Essential Requirements

You have a Ph. D. degree in a relevant scientific discipline with 5 or more years industrial experience in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. With your excellent interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills you will have the ability to operate effectively in a multidisciplinary matrix research environment, providing leadership and insight in drug discovery. The role requires ability to lead the medicinal chemistry program of discovery projects and prior experience and track record of delivery is a must. You also have previous experience of line-management and demonstrated record of people development, performance management and ability to develop high performing teams with various cultural and diversity aspects. Additional key qualities:

* Experience and a good understanding of when to use various chemical modalities in drug discovery, various hit finding strategies, multi-parameter optimization, the importance of synthetic route development and IP strategies
* A highly self-motivated, scientifically critical individual capable of receiving and analyzing input from multiple disciplines and subsequently implementing a focused strategy
* Internationally recognized, evident by your external disclosures and publication record
* Substantial track record of innovation and milestone delivery in drug discovery projects
* A genuine openness to novel scientific approaches and eagerness to drive projects with the most relevant drug modalities
* Strong influencing skills in order to build capabilities and implement improvements in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery across disciplines
* Sound knowledge of related disciplines in the drug development process
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to present to senior leaders. Excellent English
