The European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for the Technical Director position.


Description of directorate/position
ESS’s Technical Directorate is responsible for delivery of the ESS Accelerator, Target and Integrated Control Systems. The Directorate also manages the ESS Systems Engineering and Integration & Design Support divisions.

Reporting to the Director General, the Technical Director provides leadership and professional direction to the staff within the Technical Directorate, and manages the planning and implementation of the Directorate’s work scope. The Technical Director oversees the comprehensive and integrated implementation of ESS-wide system engineering and design processes. He/she ensures that the Technical Directorate’s capacity matches the ESS requirements with a priority on meeting project cost, schedule, performance, and quality goals so that the ESS facility will meet its scientific purposes.

The Technical Director is an experienced leader, proving strategic direction, while inspiring the implementation of technical solutions and best practices that address ESS’s priorities, in accordance with its human and financial resources, and an advisor to the Director General on matters relating to Accelerator, Target, Integrated Control Systems, Systems Engineering and Integration & Design.


Main responsibilities
The Technical Director will be a member of the Executive Management Team that will secure the success of ESS, now and for the future. He/she will be responsible for performance goals, scope, cost, schedule, and deliverables of the Technical Directorate and, together with the CEO and the other Directors, for the entire ESS.

Duties will include, but not be restricted to: 



• Lead and manage the ESS Technical Divisions

• Together with the CEO and other Directors, own the ESS Construction Project performance goals, scope, cost, schedule, and deliverables

• Direct, coordinate, and develop the operational aspects within the Directorate to appropriately support the ESS Construction Project

• Develop and implement long-term strategies and provide medium-term strategic direction within the respective Directorate

• Ensure that the Directorate achieves its objectives and complies with all relevant regulations and laws, and establishes a team of senior managers with operational responsibilities

• Contribute to the development of policies in compliance with overall objectives, strategies and plans

• Represent the Technical Directorate at the Steering Committee (STC) and other governing bodies

• Contribute to high-level negotiations on contracts and agreements relevant to the Technical Directorate and the technical activities of ESS

• Manage the work with the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) on behalf of the CEO

• Ensure design reviews are conducted as appropriate

• Implement risk management


Qualifications
The successful candidate has an advanced university degree in engineering, physics or relevant discipline, in combination with substantial knowledge of big science projects and construction management of accelerator and/or target station related areas. Knowledge of principles and practices across key activity areas of scientific research laboratories is a prerequisite.   Experience working in collaboration with partner institutions to realise in-kind deliverables is highly desirable. The position requires a leader who makes clear and prompt decisions, initiates and generates activity and takes responsibility for actions, projects and people. The ability to provide others with a clear direction, delegate work appropriately, and uphold ethics and values will also be of great importance. Excellent networking and interpersonal skills required, as well as demonstrated financial awareness and ability to add value through creative solutions to complex problems. Seeking opportunities for organisational improvement and working strategically to realise organisational goals is also a key success factor.

Experience of working in an international environment is essential, as are excellent communication skills and the ability to interact productively with the staff in the ESS directorates. The candidate must be fluent in written and spoken English.
