Master Thesis – CFD evaluation of Gas Turbine ventilation

Master Thesis – CFD evaluation of Gas Turbine ventilation

Arbetsbeskrivning

Medium sized gas turbines (MGT) are delivered as pre-packaged, compact units where the ventilation system is a crucial part of the explosion protection concept. As part of the transition to a de-carbonized energy system, new carbon neutral fuels play an increasingly important role for our gas turbines.

Since these fuels sometimes have very different properties than natural gas, which is the traditional gas turbine fuel, CFD analysis has become a vital tool to verify the safety of our gas turbines and enable a carbon free power generation.

The scope of this master thesis is to evaluate the impact of different fuels and CFD boundary conditions on the explosion protection system (dilution ventilation with gas detection) of medium sized gas turbines to enable operation using future green fuels.

LET’S TALK ABOUT YOU

Your profile
* MSc student in mechanical engineering, engineering physics, physics or similar
* Have a keen curiosity about complex CFD analysis and solving practical problems through simulations
* Willingness to combine practical insights with simulations to increase the safety level of our gas turbines and help enable our transition to green, carbon free power generation.
* Experience with CFD analysis software Ansys/Fluent is good but not a requirement.

Your responsibilities
* Study the impact on different gas fuels on the gas turbine explosion protection system.
* Propose and document guidelines for evaluation of which different gas compositions that can be used with the existing systems and where separate analyses are required.
* Carry out comparative studies on how different boundary conditions affect gas clouds inside the GT enclosure.
* Study the impact of different enclosure geometries on the internal ventilation and gas clouds dispersion.

Your opportunities for personal growth
* Get the opportunity to work with a world leading green power company alongside specialists in many different areas from all around the globe, help us decarbonize our society and work for a cleaner and greener future.
* Develop your interpersonal skills by interacting with multiple engineering teams as you gather knowledge on the workings of a Gas Turbine.
* Opportunity to gain knowledge on CFD analysis of gas dispersion and ventilation.
* Risk mitigation of explosions in confined spaces.

LET’S TALK ABOUT US

"Let’s make tomorrow different today" is our genuine commitment at Siemens Energy to all customers and employees on the way to a sustainable future.

Siemens Energy is one of the world’s leading energy technology companies. The company works with its customers and partners on energy systems for the future, thus supporting the transition to a more sustainable world. With its portfolio of products, solutions and services, Siemens Energy covers almost the entire energy value chain – from power generation and transmission to storage. The portfolio includes conventional and renewable energy technology, such as gas and steam turbines, hybrid power plants operated with hydrogen, and power generators and transformers. More than 50 percent of the portfolio has already been decarbonized.

A majority stake in the listed company Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) makes Siemens Energy a global market leader for renewable energies. An estimated one-sixth of the electricity generated worldwide is based on technologies from Siemens Energy. Siemens Energy employs 91,000 people worldwide in more than 90 countries and generated revenue of around €29 billion in fiscal year 2019. In Sweden Siemens Energy has 2600 employees in 10 locations.
