Duties:
The focus of this position is to run the stock assessment of the European eel, and to support colleagues in assessment analyses of additional fish species. Specifically, the applicant will model mortality incurred by eels in Sweden, and evaluate the effects of protective measures and their implementation. The work will also include analyses of population dynamics and processes potentially involved in the historic decline of this species. The applicant will work together with a team at our institute, who are involved in research, data collection, stock assessment and management advice. After an initial period, the applicant will be responsible for the tri-annual assessment of the status of the eel stock in Sweden, and related management advice (national and international). The applicant will also be expected to participate in ICES working group meetings, primary fieldwork, data collection, and database management.

Background:

The population of the European eel is distributed from the North Cape to the Nile Delta, and in all waters in-between – in a single, panmictic population. During the 20th century, the population has gradually declined to ~10% of its former abundance; since 1980 the offspring arriving in Europe rapidly declined too, but luckily is now rising again. Monitoring data for the whole population is incomplete, and hence, the European protection plan focuses on lowering human impacts on a country-by-country basis.

Qualifications:
PhD in biology, with relevant specialization, such as population modeling and/or stock assessment is required. Language skills in English is required, some skills in Swedish is a merit, but definitely not required. Interest and/or experience in related fields of research, such as fish, fisheries, ecology, and aquatic sciences is desired, as is experience in population-dynamics, stock assessment, statistics, modelling, data collection and management. In the context of the European Union protection policy for a species distributed across the continent, the applicant should be able and willing to operate in both national and international contexts, and experience in international projects (as participant and/or organiser) will be regarded as meriting. After the qualification requirements, emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and personal suitability.
