Thesis work: Study of shield-protected casting for steel with multi-physica

Background and work plan:
Production of high quality steel has always been of concern to the steelmaking industry. Quality of steel in today’s steel industry mainly refers to the cleanliness of steel.  The properties of steels are highly dependent on the presence of non-metallic inclusions and the size and distribution of them. The best way to prevent reoxidation and creation of inclusions is to restrict the contact of liquid steel and atmosphere. Shield-protected casting for steel is such as an effective method.

The proposed work consists of following contents:
 
* Literature study
* Creation of 3D models based on two industrial partner’s casting equipment
* Process simulation by using commercial software COMSOL Multiphysics
* Analysis of results focusing on the effects of process parameters and geometry on gas flow pattern and oxygen concentration distribution, etc.
* A proposal for guiding the industrial testing
* A technical reporting  and academic thesis

Suitable candidates:
The suitable candidate is interested and skilled in mathematical modeling and has basic knowledge in metal casting.
