PhD in bioinformatics with applications to antibiotic resistance

Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the Department of Mathematical Sciences and University of Gothenburg
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 200 employees and is the largest department of mathematics in Sweden. The department conducts successful research in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical statistics in a wide range of research areas.

We are located in a modern building at the center of Chalmers Johanneberg campus. More information about us can be found on our website http://www.chalmers.se/math/.

Our department continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all our activities. We work actively to be a parent-friendly organization.

We have an open PhD position in bioinformatics/computational biology with a focus on the analysis of large-scale data. The research project is centered around DNA sequence analysis with special emphasis on the identification of new forms of bacterial genes that make bacteria resistant to antibiotics, which is one of the main threats to human health globally. The project also includes phylogenetic analysis and development of methods for assessment of gene evolution. The position is a part of Chalmers graduate school in bioscience and the Environmental Dimensions of Antibiotic Resistance (EDAR) research project aiming to describe the environmental role in the development and promotion of antibiotic resistance.

The position is interdisciplinary and combines mathematical statistics and computer science with applications in biology and medicine. A substantial part of the research will be done in close collaboration with scientists from different disciplines, in particular microbiology. The Ph.D. position will be supervised by Professor Erik Kristiansson and will be part of a research group combining multiple competencies.

Major responsibilities
As a PhD student you will be part of an international research environment while you expand your knowledge of the field and write your thesis. This gives opportunities for many inspiring conversations, a lot of autonomous work and some travel. You are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, the position will normally include 20 % departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
Candidates to this position must have obtained an M.Sc. degree in bioinformatics, mathematical statistics, mathematics, computer science, physics, molecular biology or any equivalent topic or expect to complete such a degree by September 1, 2020. Previous experience of analysis of DNA sequence data is desirable. Candidates should also have good computing and programming skills (e.g. Perl/Python, R, C/C++ ) and, preferably, previous experience of the UNIX/LINUX computing environments. The candidate should also show strong communication skills, both written and orally.

As Chalmers is a highly international environment, proficiency in written and spoken English is necessary. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
