Postdoc in AI/ML methods for future renewable fuels

Postdoc in AI/ML methods for future renewable fuels

Arbetsbeskrivning

Join our team so that we can together accelerate the shift towards sustainable transport solutions!

Information about the research
For this position you will be a part of the Internal combustion engine and propulsion systems unit within the Division of Combustion and Propulsion Systems. Our commitment is to generate knowledge and methods that the society needs to be able to develop: highly efficient and ultra-clean internal combustion engines, taking exhaust after-treatment into account, and that use renewable/low carbon fuels and are a part of electrified/hybridized propulsion systems. In other words, to enable transport without toxic emissions, through:
• educate top level engineers and scientists
• conduct groundbreaking spray, combustion, engine and propulsion system research
• strongly couple experiment and simulation
• serve as a forum in which industry and academia can meet

The sustainable fuel resources are urgently required to the replace fossil fuels and alternate fuels including alcohols and biodiesels have already been introduced. In the future, an even vider variation of fuel qualities can be expected requiring adaptive and robust control systems. The goal of this project is to develop methodologies for online recalibration of the engine control parameters in order to optimize the combustion efficiency together with minimizing the exhaust emissions. Machine Learning (ML) methods will be used to predict different fuel qualities using existing on-board signals. By implementing such an online fuel quality sensor, it will provide the ability for robust engine operation with respect to varying fuel qualities, and also considering the variation in combustion due to engine wear and aging. Also, the proposed technique will be used for improved predictions of emissions.
The project is a collaboration between two departments (Mechanics and Maritime sciences, and Computer Science and Engineering) and industry (Neste OY within Combustion Engines Research Centre). The Divison of Data Science and AI from Computer Science and Engineering Department is involed in this project. This devision is dedicated to world-class research and education in the wide areas of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Data Sciece. The focus in this division is on fundamentals as well as applications in different domains such as transportation, energy, life science, health, and NLP.

Major responsibilities
As a PostDoc you will take active part in research both experimentally and modelling. You are expected to collaborate with co-workers and share knowledge in a congenial, open research environment. We expect you to write high-quality Journal papers.
Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment with a competitive salary and with social benefits. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
You have a PhD in a relevant subject, including experience in AI/ML and preferaby also in mechanical engineering. You must have a strong experimental background and strong modelling skilles. You have knowledge in Matlab or Python. Experience from internal combustion engines or emission aftertreatment systems is meritorious.

For the position you need excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, and presentation skills, as well as an ability to plan and organize the work involved.
