PostDoc Researcher in Circular Economy in the Built Environment

PostDoc Researcher in Circular Economy in the Built Environment

Arbetsbeskrivning

As a PostDoc researcher in the Sustainable Building group, you will be part of a team of IT-, architecture-, engineering- and innovation researchers with passion for co-creation processes and analytical methods towards a more sustainable and circular built environment. The position involves both theoretical and practical work. During the duration of the employment, a toolbox will be developed based on the quantification of material flows and life cycle impacts in several cities and regions in Europe to assess priorities for the design of Circular Economy action plans.  The results of the research will provide recommendations on how to develop a process for an up-scale implementation together with our project partners in other countries in Europe. The successful candidate will be part of the international DUT ECLECTIC project team and is expected to be experienced with addressing municipality and regional stakeholders as real demand owners and to research, develop and incorporate their needs into analytical methods.

Information about the division and the department
The Building Technology division at Chalmers has long experience in developing digital and quantification methods and tools for resource flows and stocks research and development in the built environment, in particular Material Flow Accounting, Advanced Building Stock Modelling, Sustainability Assessment and Ecological and Economic Life Cycle Assessment. Focus has been put in different aspects of the socio-technical systems, regions, cities, new and existing buildings and infrastructure which encompass supporting a broader relationship towards societal challenges, in particular addressing Sustainable Development Goals and Circular Economy.

Major responsibilities
The PostDoc researcher will support the Sustainable Buildings research group at the division. Main responsibilities include: describing the metabolism of selected case urban systems by quantifying the flows and stocks of materials with the highest degree of detail possible and connect it with life cycle impact indicators; adapting and developing existing tools that integrate state-of-the-art methods and tailoring them to the needs and requirements of municipalities and regions to design circular economy action plans; identifying data sources to be used and apply new IT methods to collect and analyse the information obtained. A toolbox with a standardized workflow and process will be developed to co-design, implement and monitor evidence-based sustainable CE action plans, considering context-specific challenges, targets and opportunities.

Specific responsibilities include research on the topic of urban metabolism to design circular economy action plans, supervision of Master students, teaching in selected courses and writing of research applications. The position will be financed by the ongoing DUT project ECLECTIC.

Qualifications
PhD preferably in Industrial Ecology. The degree should generally not be older than three years. Corresponding track record/portfolio in the field/s. Excellence in presentation and writing skills, modelling and statistics analysis and fluence  in English are required.

Knowledge in sustainability, circular economy, life-cycle assessment and IT will be considered a merit. Experience in cross-cultural and interdisciplinary research projects, preferably in European environments. Proficiency level in MFA studies and the gathering and analysis of quantitative data. Relevant experience in research projects in the context of sustainable and circular economy at urban level.

Relevant experience in research projects in the context of sustainable and circular economy planning. Swedish language ability is an advantage; Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
