Accelerator Physicist

Arbetsbeskrivning

Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Job Description
Introduction

Are you a motivated accelerator physicist in the field of injection and extraction? Do you relish a challenge? Join CERN's Accelerator Beam Transfer Group, to work in the field of beam transfer systems applied to the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. Take part!

You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes.

You will be working within the Accelerator Beam Transfer (ABT) Group, Beam transfer physics (BTP) section, responsible for conceptual design studies of beam transfer systems for new and proposed accelerators, and for the commissioning, machine studies and operational follow-up of existing systems.

Functions

As Accelerator Physicist, you will:

-Design layouts and optics for injection, extraction and transfer lines systems and simulate the underlying accelerator physics processes;
-Specify technical equipment system parameters like magnet field strength, homogeneity and aperture, power supply stability, and beam instrumentation functionality;
-Commission systems with beam, improve their operational performance and evaluate effects in case of non-conformities;
-Schedule, plan and coordinate beam transfer work packages from design to beam commissioning;
-Supervise students and post-doctoral Fellows.

Qualifications
Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of accelerator physics or a related field.

Experience:

Required experience in:

-Accelerator modelling codes and optics design;
-Accelerator commissioning, development and performance analysis, in particular expertise in relevant coding and scripting methods.

Desired experience:

-Knowledge of machine learning concepts;
-Design of injection, extraction and transfer line systems.

Technical competencies:

-Knowledge and application of accelerator physics theory;
-Knowledge and application of beam injection and extraction methods, beam transfer and dumping;
-Knowledge and application of beam optics (rings and transfer lines);
-Analysis and optimization of accelerator performance;
-Simulation, design and development of data processing and analysis workflows;

Behavioural competencies:

-Demonstrating accountability: taking responsibility for own actions and decisions; using openness and honesty to interact constructively with others; standing up for own opinion and actions with well substantiated arguments.
-Managing self: remaining objective, focused and productive in a stressful environment; focusing on solutions rather than problems; demonstrating a receptive approach to feedback; being open to criticism and reconsidering position accordingly; working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
-Demonstrating flexibility: being willing to work on different projects simultaneously; adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements; instigating and promoting change as an opportunity for organisational development.
-Learning and sharing knowledge: sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others; coaching others to ensure knowledge transfer; keeping up-to-date with developments in own field of expertise and readily absorbing new information; being receptive to others' ideas and building on them.
-Communicating effectively: delivering presentations in a structured and clear way; adjusting style and content to the audience; responding calmly and confidently to questions; ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.

Language skills:

-Spoken and written English: ability to understand and speak in professional contexts as well as the ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations.
-Basic knowledge of French language would be an asset or an undertaking to acquire it rapidly.
