Associate professor or professor to Chalmers

Associate professor or professor to Chalmers

Arbetsbeskrivning

Chalmers University of Technology is recruiting an Associate Professor or Professor to lead research on global observations of clouds, precipitation and humidity. The position is a permanent faculty position at the Division of Geoscience and Remote Sensing (GEO) at the Department of Space, Earth and Environment. We offer you the possibility to pursue your ideas in an inclusive working environment at one of the top universities in Sweden, at the lively west coast city of Gothenburg.

The Division of Geoscience and Remote Sensing
The division conducts research, education, and utilization within a wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines, including ground-based, airborne and satellite measurements, as well as numerical modeling and data analysis.

The division's goals are to improve understanding of the Earth system and global environmental problems, as well as to provide and interpret global datasets. We pursue scientific knowledge and provide tools to tackle problems of importance to society, such as climate change, Earth system science, air pollution, natural hazards and monitoring of the Earth's surface.

We have a long experience in developing and applying remote sensing across the electromagnetic spectrum and studying problems at different scales: from molecular processes in clouds to global environmental change. Our setting is distinctive in Sweden in that we have expertise in developing measurement techniques, as well as in modeling and methods to combine data from observations and models through data assimilation and machine learning methods.

Major responsibilities
Your expertise will help us expand our research on the atmospheric branch of the hydrological cycle and its role in weather and climate. Particularly, your research should strengthen our capabilities in observing tropospheric water content and processes, for example, but not limited to, precipitation, evaporation, horizontal and vertical water transport, clouds, and latent heat transfer.

You will conduct research and develop your research program, secure funding for new projects, contribute to existing projects, and supervise PhD students and post-docs. Besides research, you are expected to teach up to 20% of your working time. Other important aspects of the position include communicating your research as well as cooperating within the department, academia, industry and with society at large.

In addition to the position's specific field of research, the current recruitment should also foster and facilitate collaboration within the established research fields of the GEO division. The recruitment should be in line with the division's strategy to strengthen the core expertise of the division rather than introducing entirely new research fields.

Contract terms
Full-time permanent employment.

Qualifications
You are an independent researcher with a PhD degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, physics, or related discipline.

Mandatory requirements for the position include:
- Shown ability/potential to develop and lead the atmospheric water research area forward as documented by your international research publications, invited contributions to the research arena, patents and similar.
- Experience in formulating research ideas and leading successful proposals for research and innovation projects.
- Documented teaching experience and pedagogical skill, including training in higher education pedagogy.
- Experience as main or co-supervisor of PhD students.

Meritorious qualifications include:
- Participant in an international programme of atmospheric water observations.

We would like you to have a demonstrated commitment to teach undergraduate and graduate students. As you are expected to teach up to 20% of your working time, we will place a great deal of emphasis on your pedagogical portfolio.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, we would like you to acquire sufficient knowledge to be able to communicate and teach in Swedish within a few years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

This position is advertised as an open-rank position on either professor level or associate professor level. The selected level of the position will be decided based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. For a definition of the qualification requirements and work descriptions for the two positions, please consult our Rules of Procedure – Chalmers University of Technology's Appointment Regulations for Teaching and Research Faculty (Professor section 6.2 and Associate Professor section 6.3). Your qualifications and academic level will be evaluated by the department, Chalmers Faculty Appointment Committee and external evaluators.

External applicants who currently do not meet the full pedagogical requirements  may be employed for a permanent position under the condition that the required education is completed within the first three years of employment.
